I just got off the HP help line.  After changing my black ink cartridge a test page was printing each time I turned the machine on.  This is very costly, in both time and ink as the cartridges themselves for this machine hold very little ink.  I tried to learn from HP tech how to turn off the test-print while keeping my color cartridge empty.  It turns out that you cant do it.  HP requires you to keep buying and using cartridges whether you need them or not.If you buy the color ink it will use it up in its testings.  And if you dont buy the color cartridge it will use up your black ink by printing the test each time you turn on the printer.  The printer was inexpensive sure, but I'm paying for it in wasted ink. 

I want to print in black only and have changed the properties to grayscale, but it still won't let me print in black only. The magenta is out and it says I must replace, but i don't want color! help!

1- Turn off power and unplug from power source. 2- Open right side of printer (looking at the front). 3- Disconnect,by pulling gently, both white flat ribbon cables off the main circuit board. 4- Plug in power source and turn printer on. Wait till you get a error message and push "Ok". 5- Unplug power source. 6- Reconnect the flat ribbon cables by aligning and carefully pushing into the conectors on the main circuit board. 7- Plug in power source and turn printer on (Printer preparing occurred). 8- voila, the nasty error message 0xc18a0001 "Ink System has Failed" is now gone. http://www.fixya.com/support/t451942-help

Follow steps below to reset Hewlett-Packard (HP) All-in-one Printer. Resetting your printer will reset your printer to its original state.


1. Without turning the unit off, unplug the power cord from the back of the product.
2. Press and hold “# and 6′ keys.
3. While holding those keys plug the power cord back in.
4. Wait until the screen goes blank before you release those keys.

Your Printhead has failed ,but before declaring it dead pls confirm whether paper was struck before receiving this error very badly and also whether you have been using it for a long time then the printhead needs to be replaced

Assuming a 2 cartridge system, and you want B&W or sepia, pull the color cartridge and print away! Works for my HP DJ 5440.

Your HP printer may also encounter a glitch along the way. Notwithstanding having no problems for a long time, some printers go for a printing freeze thus causing the error 0x6100004a. Have you run the Wireless setup wizard from Printer ? If No, Press Setup button on printer front panel - Scroll till Wireless/Network settings - Choose Wireless setup Wizard and follow the directions.

After you have setup printer on network - Run the Printer s/w disk and Choose Add a Device and Choose Wired/Wireless network and continue with the Installation screen.

NOT A SOLUTION, JUST SOME FACTS
First of all, your printer is "NOT" the worst model ever made, every printer that hp (as you probably noted I used small letters hp because I think hp is a small worm of a co.) makes is a problem waiting to happen. The worst of it all is that the don't care about there customers. I have a almost $300.00
photosmart that is a few months out of warranty, even though it stayed new in the box for over 6 months because of a heart attack I had. I ran out of two of the colored Inks, but continued to use the printer for word documents only till shortly after, the printer said it was unable to print till the two empty colour cart. were replaced. I continued printing all other items on my up stairs computer. About a month later, I purchased the cart. needed, installed them in the photosmart,(which I think is a oxymoron) and the printer came up with,"Ink System Has Failed" Error code oxc18a0306.
I know this is getting long winded, but it's the only way to get my point across fully. I contacted hp and after over 40 min. they told me that the error code was fatal and could not be fixed!!!!! They said It was out of warranty and would not be replaced for any amount of money besides paying full price for a replacement. ( Ya Like I Would Buy Another hp product). I have since then had the printer checked out and a small pc board with, a valve or sensor for all the ink supplies is not letting the yellow ink out of the pump to the print head. I contacted again, like a fool, hp and was on the phone for another 52.min. till they told me that part was not available..... End of story

I hope this story gets out to every person that had, or has a hp product and
had a problem that was not resolved by hp, besides telling the customer they will fix the problem by selling to you ,at full price another printer.....

You can learn how to set up your printer driver with CD or Without CD. Follow the given steps: • First, load the software installation CD into the drive and start the Hp printer setup or Installation process from 123.hp.com/setup. In general, your printer device automatically opens the setup.exe. • If not, you can manually open it by browsing through the computer device. • Hp printer setup or Installation process is of 3 steps. Prepare, connect and activate. First, they prepare the basic printer setup process. • Second, the connect displays you a list of software that is going to be installed in your device. Use the Customize Software Selection to change software selection. • Click on the box "I have reviewed and accept the installation agreements and settings" checkbox and click Next. • After that, your installer automatically completes the printer driver installation process. Now, the installer automatically detects the printer-computer connection and links the printer with the preferred device. • The installer might ask you to enter the printer related details like the primary usage and the postal code to get the location information. • Finally, the activate step lets you register your printer device on the Official Website. For the Activation process, you need an active internet connection.

I've had the same error:

Hold down the following keys:

Photosmart Express, Photo Fix, Reprints, Print Photos and then Help.

You'll get the message: "Enter Special Key Combo"

Press OK.

Scroll over to Reports then self test: and press ok, it should print. a selftest report.

If you get an error Pen in Chute 1, or 2, has tsr failure: Call/Chat with an HP technician.

Hi,This seems to be Printer failure error. The best you can expect the printer to work is with the steps below.Remove all the cartridges from the printer. Wipe the electrical ( tiny golden contacts ) with Lint free cloth. Disconnect the power cord from back of printer and while holding the power and cancel button - connect the cord. Release the buttons after 2-3 seconds.It should prompt you to install cartridges. Hope everything goes smooth, if not it could be hardware related issue. Excuse me--but I would like hp to have a look at this series and come out with a statement.

I did call someone in computer repair i think he said they cannot fix it (I don't remember that part)--but (this I do recall) that it probably needed a sensor to be replaced.

I have another bone to pick with hp--revealing: I did use the quick set up format and did not watch any dvd s on it if they gave them--

one thing I've guessed from all of this--there are several colors that get used up awfully fast, and yellow is one of them--even when we have our default set for black. double check yourselves: I believe that their nice black is created with yellow and other colors as well as the black cartridge.

Since I cannot say whether this was revealed in any of the handouts or an instructional video, if there was one--I don't know that they didn't tell this outright.

To be truly user friendly--I don't think that sort of information should be so buried that a casual user wouldn't know that.

(Sure it makes what they more impressive if you don't know how they do it, but I'd like to think they want us to choose easily what colors we are using, especially when printing 'black' ink!)
