I think this unit uses 'UM-1' batteries. They are also known as 'D Cell', 'R20' or 'LR20' batteries. Most good electrical, hardware and some of the larger 'supermarket' stores will have these batteries available. A good quality brand like Duracell or Varta should do the job. There is also two separate smaller 'button' batteries in the unit used to power the clock.

Rubbing 70-90% alcohol applied on a piece of cloth then spread on the radio will eliminate the sticky substance. May need several application and vigorous rubbing. After the process, my Grundig G8 Traveller II looks better than the original rubbery texture. Cleaner too.

WWV transmits on MHZ and not KHZ 5 10 and 15 and lower power on 2.5 and 20 MHZ. Depending on where you are, the antenna might no be enough to bring in the signal. You should use an external antenna for serious reception.

WD40 IS NOT A CONTACT CLEANER

On the rear where the power adapter plugs in, it should show in input voltage and polarity. Check the power supply output voltage with a volt meter. Generally, it is the sum total of all the batteries, so it if takes 4xAA @1.5 volt batteries the voltage would be 6 volts DC. It sounds like it is faulty.

Take it to an authorised Grundig Servicentre for repair otherwise it may never work again.

I had similar problem with my S350. It was a component which had failed. I found a place that fixed it at a reasonable cost. It is ACT Electronics in Long Beach, CA. I don't have phone number but you can google it. It is run by a person from India. You send him the radio with a $30 check. He then assesses what is wrong, gives you a price to fix it, send him a check, then he fixes and sends you the radio. He did a fine job for me. Good luck!

Don't continue powering it up. The hum is the transformer that powers the circuits. There is a failed electronic component which is causing the audio to be absent. The radio this was copied from was a tube radio and none of the original components are the same in this solid state copy. The problem is most likely in the audio amplifier section of the circuit board, but being most likely surface mounted components like all modern manufactured radios finding and isolating the fault will cost you more than buying a replacement.

I have been searching as well, to date, it still won't power on even after replacing the battery, getting a charger and charging the old battery. I also used the reset button and no help. I asked Grundig / Eton for help a couple of times and no response. Very disappointing, it is like Grundig isn't around any more or won't support their own products any more.
