I have a GE profile French door bottom freezer fridge PFSF5NFZA BB thats about 5 years old that is showing fluctuations in temperatures in both the fridge and freezer. We got a certified GE repair tech in to diagnose what we initially thought it was a seal problem from air escaping the freezer. Defrosted the fridge for 24 hours plugged it back in and it ran fine then two weeks later started exhibiting the same symptoms, freezer would go -15 fridge would go to 48, when we turn the freezer down to 0 fridge side gets warmer. Tech came out again, tested the board, said it's good, said it's not the temp sensor or therm defrost because the freezer still working fine, making ice, and fans are blowing, etc. Tested accuracy of fridge and freezer temperatures with a separate fridge and freezer thermometer and they are both within a degree or two of what the display on fridge says. After doing some research and speaking with other GE techs, he called us back and said the return air vents that are in the freezer act like heaters and circulate warm air to defrost these vents that allow for the cold air from the freezer to cool the fridge, if these vents get blocked with ice, the air from the freezer won't circulate into the fridge, and as we turn down the freezer it melts a little but will freeze back up thus not allowing that cold air to circulate into the fridge. Basically said the fridge is done because there is no way to fix this issue with this fridge. This specific model did have some recalls and from what he told us, the way it's built there is no current way to repair or replace these heaters. Currently it's still functional except I will need to defrost it every couple of weeks but obviously can't keep doing this and absolutely no budget for a new fridge now as I'm not working and husbands hours are cut way down. Does anyone out there know about a possible fix for this fridge or if this sounds like something that could be fixed? My husband and I are relatively handy and could possibly attempt something to try to salvage this thing but don't know whether to throw in the towel and get a new fridge or see if anyone on this forum could offer any help? Thank you!
