Go to www.garmin.com , you can purchase and download a update from there.

Download and install Garmin Express from Garmin. Plug your GPS into your computer. The software will identify your GPS and allow you to register it, as well as provide any current updates.

If your GPS is suddenly shut off check your device may be set to battery-saving mode. If you faced a battery issue, then replace the battery. Check out the replacement guide for more information on how to replace the battery. After that, try plugging in the GPS to see if it will stay on. go to the garmin site register your unit use the pc connect the usb cable to the phone it will self setup there is a software setup for the 1490t i did mine 2 days ago , still can't figure out the software for doing your own routing etc but to register it follow the above

Sorry, no free maps. I know I've tried. You either live with the old map or buy the latest version.
I bought the life time maps updates and I'm glad I did.
I've updated my maps at least 6 times.
New maps are about $70.
Life time maps are about $99 (when I bought mine)
BUT FIRST make SURE you have the latest software in YOUR computer and in YOUR Garmin before you load any maps.

After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start", "Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater"
REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.

Try it on a different computer: sometimes the USB connection is simply unable to provide sufficient power on some machines. If that fails then try a different USB lead as yours may be faulty. If the unit charges correctly in the car, then the USB socket on your Garmin is definitely OK.

Just connect the satnav to your computer with the mini USB lead. The narrow end goes in the back of the satnav and the other end in the USB port of your computer. You need to have the computer turned on and if the satnav doesn't turn on automatically turn it on also. It will take approximately 8 hours to charge.

The Garmin GPS are among the easiest to use and they have the most complete mapping on the market. To update the mapping, there are several versions of the software integrated into these road gps. Nuvi 1350 charges in 4 to 8 hours. If your Nuvi is not accepting a charge, you may have a loose or bad USB cable. Note that the Nuvi can be charged with a phone charger. Charging it with a connection to a computer moves charging time toward 8 hours and more towards infinity if you don't have the driver installed on the computer. Turn the Garmin off. If the driver ins installed in the coputer, plug the Garmin into the computer and then hold down the power button on the Garmin for 30 seconds.
