Above is your manual, this has much information. From what you describe, I would think "Sensor" or "Drive" for the sensor. IF there was a Short, I don't really think, it would actually go? What you need to do, is use the manual and perform the troubleshooting steps, and check all sensors switches, etc. If the windings are shorted, then accordingly the "Drive" too, well, that would most likely be destroyed.. if it is so, you will need to check that too.and replace it.

Well it seems that their could be a limit switch problem. also if someone has replaced the limit switch they could have not connected the wires back up correctly. if your wiring and switch are correct than you have a bad circuit board. my opinion is to not even fix it and replace the whole opener with a gto-pto gp sl50 They are the most reliable opener out so far and come with all the features that elite charges extra for like a battery backup for instance.

I have a eg640 and my mother in law has the same eg640 for are gate

the back up battery has failed or is flat. It starts to work after sun up because the solar panel is feeding power to the system

I actually dont know the model. Still i assume not opening is not moving at all? if you open the gate manually does it close? The clicking sound tells me that at least one internal relay is beeing activated. With that i would check the IR sensors first. Then the motor conections and if there is voltage on them when you press the remote and the clicking happens. The relay will close a circuit to activate the motor, (DANGER) since i dont know the circuit the relay could provide 12 volts up to mains voltage, if you dont have electrical/electronics knowledge dont do it, find a professional to do it for you. If the motor gets power when the relay clicks could be the motor, motor capacitor (some motors work at mains AC voltage and use a big, normally white capacitor for startup) or the gear box, i've fixed a few garage door and gate systems just by dismantling the gear box, reajust and lubricating them. Disable the telephone control to isolate that much of the system. You should be able to just disconnect the telephone line into the unit. Do without for a day or so to find if it might be the telephone control. IF IT IS get the telephone company to log the origination of the calls. If it still does it without the telephone, change the codes as it is likely some other nearby person has the same system and his codes are the same as yours. The unit is saying it is getting a valid command... so it has to be coming from someplace. There is a chance one of the remotes in your vehicle is sending this. You might, although it is inconvenient, keep one of the vehicles at a time say several blocks away to see if problem stops. Moisture in the button could cause one of the remotes to be sending the commands.

That light flashing means a limit switch issue is present. Check the switch and all the wiring to that switch.
