My Delta 23-197 variable speed grinder will not run. Only tried it once and it's been put up for a couple of years. Will not start. Light comes on. Has power

It's possible that the variable speed control may be the issue with your Delta 23-197 grinder. However, before attempting to bypass it, there are a few other things you can check. First, make sure that the grinder is properly plugged in and that the power outlet is functioning correctly. Check the power cord and make sure that there are no cuts or breaks in the cord. Next, check the switch and make sure that it is properly engaged. If the switch is faulty, it may need to be replaced. You can also check the brushes on the motor to see if they are worn out or damaged. If the brushes are worn out, they will need to be replaced. If none of these troubleshooting steps resolve the issue, it may be possible to bypass the variable speed control. However, this is not recommended unless you have experience with electrical wiring and understand the risks involved. If you do decide to bypass the variable speed control, you will need to identify the wiring that controls the speed control and connect the wires together to bypass the control. However, keep in mind that this will result in the grinder running at full speed all the time and may shorten the life of the motor. It's always best to have a qualified electrician or technician perform any electrical modifications to your tools.

Can my Delta 23-660 "two grinder wheels" be used with only one wheel. One wheel was lost in a move. Can't replace it immediately

I have used a double-ended bench grinder for years with only a single wire brush, without problems.

I have a Delta 6 bench grinder model #23-680. How do I hold the shaft from turning as I loosen the nut hold the grinding wheel in place?

Hold (or lock) the grinding wheel on the other side if loose or lock because the locking direction is the same direction and don,t forget to ringing (sound-check -like a tuning fork) the stone if you replace it with a new one The risk is small but safety first

I have a Delta Model 23-660 that won't start anymore. For awhile, if I gave the wheel a spin by hand it it would start, but not not at all. I'm assuming brushes? If so, what brushes would it take?

  • there is also an
  • centrifugal circuit inside one- side of the motor electricfield (not in the spare parts to see or order) that could have a problem but first measure the capacitor
  • There are no brushes used its an induction motor. with start capacitor and an centrifugal switch. that was when you give a swing to the grinder the capacitor you needed has an 8 or 10 microfarrad 250 volt AC to start i think but be shure the start centrifugal is in good order and the capacitor together.

Have tried everything, can't get

On a bench grinder the wheels turn towards you. This means the grinding wheel on the right side, has a right and nut, and the left side has a left handed nut. If you're trying to remove the left side turn the nut counter-clockwise

How to remove wheel on delta 10' grinder

Unplug it first, if you like your skin. Use a wrench on the nut, and hang onto the wheel with one bare hand while you turn the nut in the same direction as the wheel normally spins. If you have a lot of difficulty doing that, jam the wheel with a piece of wood.

Need a delta grinding wheel Cat. No 23-583 36 grit coarse AL. OXIDE were can I find one?

It doesn't need to be Delta, all it needs is to be 8" diameter, same width (1" or 3/4" or 1/2" or whatever), and have an arbor hole (or plastic adapter) the right size - they're all pretty standard. You can buy wheels like that locally at your hardware store, or online at Amazon or eBay or Sears or any number of other places. They're nearly as common as dirt, and really inexpensive.

New shaft for a delta 23-840

You need to check if the cost of the shaft will be too much and whether it makes sense. You have not indicated the reason for changing the shaft, if there is damage e it can be mended in most cases with the help of a machine shop.So check cost with replacement before you attempt.

I own a Delta 23

first mark the caps so that when you reassemble they will align properly, Next get a small screwdriver and GENTLY pry the cap apart. One end probably has a rotating switch with wires coming from it so be careful. When reassembling you can use a small piece of wood to tap the end bells back into place.

My 6 inch Cummins bench grinder stopped working.

Try wrapping a thin cord around the shaft many times to allow the shaft to be spun in the normal running direction when pulled. Pull sharply on the cord and turn the motor on--if the starting capacitor is bad, the motor should continue to run until shut off. If there is no capacitor, then the motor uses a start winding and a centrifugal switch to start. The switch is supposed to open when the motor comes up to speed. If you used to hear a loud 'click' when the motor was shut off and slowing down, then you likely have the start winding and switch. If the contacts on the switch become burned and not make contact, then it will display the symptoms you mention. You will need to access one or the other end covers to reach the switch. Hope this helps!

To sharpen tools

The angle things on the grinder are usually set up for drill bits and never moved again. If you need to sharpen your shovel, I would get a 4 1/2 grinder with 80 grit disc in there and grind away from the edge, Not into it, it cuts 10 times faster, cleaner, straighter, than the grinder, use fit or the lawn mower blades too, and the machete, use the grinder for your drill bits and other precision type stuff, don't let the wheels get rounded off or uneven, use a wheel dresser if they do. I have a couple grinders set up in my shop, one wheel for finer stuff, then a wire wheel, then a green wheel for carbide, and then another wire wheel. I use a 1 inch belt for knives and finer stuff, and a 10 disc for serious stuff along with the 48 inch belt. So you can see, I use them a lot. But if you need to use the grinder for your shovel, I would not use the angle stops, I would do it freehand and you can only cut the outside edge, and it will be hard to get it around there. You might have to take the angle stops off. Hope this helps.

It hums but won't turn. are there brushes?

Hi Chip , have you tried !!carefully!! turning the grinding wheels whilst the grinder is powered up and humming and does this start the machine , if it does your motor start capacitor ( a cylinder/tube with 2 wires or connectors on it ) will be deffective or the leads might have became detached from it , a replacement capacitor is quite cheap but you must replace it with the exact one ( a motor start/run capacitor of the correct Mfd or uF rating typically 30 uF/Mfd and at the correct voltage 110/220V )
if this dosent fix your problem most likely your motor start windings in the motor field coils are burnt out and the grinder is uneconomical to repair .
hope this helps .

Grinder won't turn on

It sounds like the capacitator might be bad or the starter windings. What you can try and BE CAREFUL is turn the switch on and spin the wheel by hand in direction it will be running to see if starts. Again BE CAREFUL

The new part number is 901912. You will have to contact a Dewalt service center to see if they can rustle one up for you. They are no longer available directly from Dewaltservicenet.com but you may get lucky contacting a service center.
