That number is the signal strength indication. IF you get four beeps when that shows up and it could be E instead of 8, the unit has detected something wrong.

The outside diameter of the power ports in cars varies slightly. If there's too much "slop" between the port and the plug, you'll have the indication you're seeing. Try wedging a some card board or similar between one side of the port and plug to help keep pressure on the side contacts - and keep the plug from falling out of the port. You may even wish to hard wire the detector to your car's switched accessory terminal. This will remove the power port from the the equation and the detector will turn off when the engine is off, and automatically turn on when the engine is running.Good luck!

Check Cig Plug Fuse and also Accessory fuse in your vehicle

I have a Cobra ESD-9117 that wouldn't turn on. There was power at the plug end. I took it apart and took the power/volume button off. I used a magnifying glass and found the contact for the power must have bent from all the years of use. I bent it back and all is good again.

Maybe the fuse for the accessory port / cigarette lighter is blown. Check the fuse map for your car and confirm if the fuse is good or not. Or, if you have another device that uses the port, plug it in and see if it gets power.

When changing the Settings on your detector, please keep in mind: Each time the unit is turned On the factory settings of Highway and Auto Mute-On will be set. They can be changed while the unit is in use as described in the following sections. Assistance Muting An Alert Your detector allows you to quickly turn Off an audio Alert by momentarily pressing the Mute button. If you press the Mute button a second time during the Alert, the audio Alert will be turned back On. Auto Mute Mode Auto Mute will automatically reduce the audio volume of all alerts after four (4) seconds for as long as the signal is detected. The factory setting for Auto Mute is On. Highway/City Mode Setting your detector to City mode delays all X band audio alerts at lower signal strength levels. (A single beep will sound when the signal is first Notice detected.) To change settings, follow the procedure listed below, which indicates what you will see and hear as you complete each step. The factory setting is Highway mode. Highway Mode City Mode Mute Button Press and release To Turn Auto Mute Off X Ka L S City Button Press and release Press and release the Mute button while no alert is occurring.

The unit comes with a windshield mount - assemble the bracket ( if needed) and secure to a location on the windshield. Make sure its above the wipers and not behind any metal. Once installed, make sure that the radar detector is LEVEL WITH THE ROAD! This may require bending the bracket to level the unit. (Note: remove detector while adjusting the bracket).

My AURA updated all by itself while leaving my house. It must have picked up the GPS FREQUENCY as I got closer to my hometown but, when I first got it I tried to go to the website as directed in the instructions and I wasn't able to do anything but watch the video so I just put it in my truck and it just started doing what it is supposed to be doing !!! Nice unit for the price !!
