The REALLY nice part about 1996 AirConditioners... They most LIKELY use R134A refrigerant (NON-CFC still reasonably priced (even in CALIFORNIA ))... Again... If it's like mine (and lots of others, I sold Carrier), the little door covering the controls at the bottom gets "tired" and doesn't close all the way. Walking by it can cause it to turn on sometimes. That little door switch could be causing your issue too. Does the equipment run without trouble? Obviously there are other problems that may be causing it, ut that's the simplest one to check. tape it tight and see

5 flashing is ' compressor drive' and check the high pressure, condenser fan motor capacitor for proper running

Your vent pipe is not pitch properly. It should pitch towards the furnace
