My Carrier 21000 BTU air conditioner (model YCB213E built in 1996) has always worked perfectly until yesterday. When I pushed the red button to turn it on - nothing happened.
The REALLY nice part about 1996 AirConditioners...
They most LIKELY use R134A refrigerant (NON-CFC still reasonably priced (even in CALIFORNIA ))...
Again...
Just like REFRIGERATORS.. pretty straight forward.
- low voltage contactor SWITCHES LINE VOLTAGE
direct to the starter capacitors & the Compressor
(CAUTION: HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES ).
>> Check your LINE VOLTAGES first.
>> Check your transformer voltages SECOND.
>> Check you wire CONNECTIONS: after 22 years
of service... those contacts can fail and simply need
to be cleaned and RETERMINATED.
>> Check the CONTACTOR switch to assure
LINE VOLTAGE is present on ALL contacts.
(most contactors can be MANUALLY operated
USE a quality lube to soften those joints and GENTLY
remove any burned contacts. PROPERLY strip... and
use ANTI-OXIDENT compound (sparingly) on ALL
mating surfaces before REASSEMBLY...
You can do this:
My Carrier thermostat screen shuts down for 10 seconds and then comes back.
If it's like mine (and lots of others, I sold Carrier), the little door covering the controls at the bottom gets "tired" and doesn't close all the way. Walking by it can cause it to turn on sometimes. That little door switch could be causing your issue too. Does the equipment run without trouble? Obviously there are other problems that may be causing it, ut that's the simplest one to check. tape it tight and see
