How to install printer on

1) Connect the printer, many of them will auto detect 2) Go to System > Administration > Printing 3) Choose Add Printer 4) If your printer has been detected then you will see it listed, if not click on other and browse to the drivers.
Not all printers are supported, if you don't see your exact model number there then try one that is close.

Am pulling my hair out. I'm a newbie to Linux but

Backup, Repairing and Reinstalling GRUB
  • To make a backup a copy of the existing menu.lst file use: cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.oldYou can try re-installing the grub using the Ubuntu Live CD, in two different ways.

GUI
  1. Boot your computer up with Ubuntu CD
  2. Go through all the process until you reach "[!!!] Disk Partition"
  3. Select Manual Partition
  4. Mount your appropriate linux partions / /boot swap .....
  5. DO NOT FORMAT THEM.
  6. Finish the manual partition
  7. Say "Yes" when it asks you to save the changes
  8. It will give you errors saying that "the system couldn't install ....." after that
  9. Ignore them, keep select "continue" until you get back to the Ubuntu installation menu
  10. Jump to "Install Grub ...."
  11. Once it is finished, just restart your computer

I have an ASUS netbook

1. I would suggest finding out which model Eee PC you are using and the hard drive size & type (4GB SSD, 160GB SATA, etc...). If you have less than 4GB, I would probably recommend using another Linux distro, as the Netbook Edition of Ubuntu is pretty heavy.

2. Next, I would probably suggest plugging in the Eee PC (Software/OS installation is very power intensive).

3. Download your distribution (Ubuntu Netbook Edition or Desktop, etc).

4. Download a copy of unetbootin for your PC (unetbootin.sourceforge.net -- There are Linux & Windows versions available.)

5. Using a USB thumb drive (USB Memory stick), you will want to wipe the drive (format using FAT/FAT32 filesystem).

6. Run Unetbootin, selecting the proper USB thumb drive & ISO image from the Ubuntu website.

7. After Unetbootin is finished, close it and safely disconnect the USB drive.

8. Next, plug the USB thumb drive into the Eee PC.

9. Turn on power to the Eee PC & after seeing the initial BIOS splash, hit the ESC key on the keyboard. This should bring up a boot selection screen. Using the arrow keys, select the appropriate USB drive and hit Enter (Return).

10. If all goes well, you should be running Ubuntu Desktop/Ubuntu Netbook Edition as a live desktop. (The installer is a link on the desktop.)

11. There are several step-by-step guides out there, so check them out, if needed. The installer should be very simple on this type of hardware, etc.

Good Luck!

Internet connection problem in ubuntu

That depends on the modem and router settings. If you are using cable modem (a box connected to the cable from your internet service provider) without a router, you will need to set your computer to get a IP address automatically and restart the modem. Then you can renew the IP address if necessary. If you are using a router (another box) connected with the modem, then you might want to connect to the router by using the IP address on the same subnet as the internal interface of the router and enable DHCP. Then you can restart the modem and get an IP address for the router (usually you can see a button to click for that on the management page of your router after you open that in your browser, check the manual of your router about details). After that you can reconfigure your computer to use dynamic IP address and then renew IP address or restart. Please don't hesitate to post if you have questions.

I can't get my microphone

If your thinkpad has a built in (onboard) mic you may need to disable it. Go to the startup settings and disable any onboard mic. You can always enable it if that's not the problem.

Can't surf web or download in lucid lynx

You have to make a setting of the network through a terminal and it will work fine after this is being done properly. This is happens due to unconfigured setting in the network adapters. You can also directly make setting with the nework adapters settings. Select the proper modem and connections.

Ubuntu update manager error w failed to fetch 404 not found

Hi
When running ubuntu update manager if you get an error saying w failed to fetch 404 not found. In most cases you need to look into your DSN settings to fix this problem. Your DSN under your network setting are wrong. You can double check the setting on your Router or with your ISP's website
