It depends. If the "partitioning" used the entire disk-drive, rather than "preserving" the existing partition in which Windows was loaded, then you need to re-install Windows.

or telephone the manufacturer and order a replacement set of those disks (probably $20, plus $20 for overnight courier). Or, borrow a "retail" Windows XP CD-ROM, and install Windows,
using the 25-character product-key on the decal on the side/bottom of your computer.

Your question is somewhat confusing. If the password you set is not the same one that your parents originally set, they will of course know that you changed it. If the password tool is complaining that the password is too simple, then it is most likely not the password your parents set, because they would have encountered the same message.
You can set a password of arbitrary (non-null) length from the command line using the command sudo passwd

This indicates the the root file system has been damaged in some fashion, removing the init program and destroying the /proc directory, and possibly others as well. The only real solution is to try to reinstall. If the problem reoccurs frequently, you may have a damaged hard drive.
How to establish a network connection using
Make sure that you have samba installed, that will allow you to share folders as shares that Windows can see.
If you want to get tot he CLI on the ubuntu server from the XP machines, just download PuTTY (just google 'download putty'), and then you should be able to SSH to the ubuntu server.

if you have vista format the ubuntu partion then use EASY BCD to fix the bootscreen.
if you have ubuntu use your live cd and go into the partition manager and remove it from there.

First of all check system setting.
It seems like your modules are not loaded, if you just installed, I recommend you to
re-install Ubuntu, if this is not the case, try to run -
sudo apt-get -f install
If everything fails, try this - sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start
