If you do not have communication by the printer when connected by USB cable to the USB Port on the Computer; you are lacking the updated printer drivers. Go to Brother on line, plug in the DCP 8040 ( the printer mod.) in the support area, and download the current printer drivers. Install the drivers and see if you can now connect properly. You can also use the Windows DEVICES to locate the printer and check for updates.

unable to print 4f means, theirs a problem in the printer head.. the best solution for your printer is to replace new printerhead.

High probability it is a waste ink count or "error 46" code fault. There are purge count reset codes available on line, but you should also remove and clean out the waste ink chamber. It is a messy job and given the age of the machine, you may be better off replacing it

You have a blockage in the print head and/or feed line from the ink cartridge to the print head. One possible fix would be to make a pad of paper kitchen towel wet it and sit the print head on it overnight. With luck the pad will soak the blockage and draw ink through the head. Give the machine two self cleans and try a print quality test to see if you have made ANY improvement. If no improvement - forget it as the blockage has been there too long.

70 = paper jam or other sensor according to this website:
The LCD displays an error code number What does it mean Brother

Perhaps when cleaning, some moisture got in a place it shouldn't - let it dry for a while and retry.

Here is the brother site to download manual in pdf. Page 85 shows routine maintenance. Read thru those instructions and see where you may have missed something: http://download.brother.com/welcome/doc002377/dcp6690w_ukeng_usr.pdf

Best wishes

Hello, Jorge.

It would help to know "exactly" what the error message states, such as "The USB Device Not Recognized" or something like that. Here are a couple of things to try in order to narrow down the problem source:
1. Try a different USB connection on the computer. If that one works, the problem is probably that other connection port.
2. If none of the ports work with the printer, try a different USB-powered device, such as a cell phone and charging cable. If it works, the problem lies with the printer/computer connection (more likely the printer).
3. If none of the USB ports work, the problem might be your USB port itself. Go to "Device Manager" (in Control Panel), then look for "Universal Serial Bus controllers." Check to see if any have a disabled symbol. Check under "Properties" that device status is: "This device is working properly." If not, try updating the drivers (under the "Driver" tab).

Using copy cartridges this is a common issue. Always use genuine cartridges.

Check the obvious drum and toner ok, paper supply ok, paper not jammed in fuser.
then check out the attached link

then buy a new machine, keep the drum and toner cartridge from the old one as spares.
