Gas water heaters are complicated and dangerous for inexperienced non-technician.If this repair is different from regular pay grade, advise calling technician qualified to work on this model. If you need further help, I’m available over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/gene_9f0ef4df2f9897e7
Assuming it is not an electric spark, but is really the type with a real pilot light:Move the gas control on the water heater to PILOTPush the valve handle on the gas controller down to start the gas flowing to the pilot.Using a match, light the gas at the pilot while holding the gas controller valve handle down.Keep the gas valve handle depressed for 30 seconds after lighting.Release the gas controller vale handle - the pilot should remain lit. If not, repeat lighting one more timeOnce the pilot remains lit, turn the gas controller valve to On - this should cause the main flame to come on.NOTE: DO NOT LIGHT A MATCH IF YOU SMELL A HEAVY CONCENTRATION OF GAS - CALL A SERVICEMAN AND VACATE THE AREA
Use CLR from local hardware and pumice stone. This will remove any problem and shine it right up. If you need further help, I’m available over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/gene_9f0ef4df2f9897e7
I would check the metal door on the bottom near the burner, sometimes they come loose and vibrate. If not that then I would suspect the chimney liner inside the tank, I have seen them corrode and start vibrating when the gas is running
3) Read pdfs above first, and then Add a comment with missing information below, for possible do-it-yourself help. Does this water heater have a blower? Is gas valve electronic? Or does gas valve have a dial? If gas valve is electronic, have you checked outlet with circuit analyzer? Did pilot light work correctly for a while? If so how long? Where is water heater located? Hot attic? Closet? Garage? Is area dirty and dusty? Has air intake been cleaned? What color is pilot flame? Clear blue or yellow-or-orange? Have you inspected inside of combustion chamber for dripping water?

Understand the formula.
Converting units of measurements always requires a specific formula. The
procedure from yards to meters is X (yards) multiplied by "0.9144"
meters.
2
Write your formula with the number of yards. Multiply by "0.9144." For example, 100 yards * 0.9144 =?.
3
Use a calculator. In the example above, 100 yards * 0.9144 =?, the answer is 91.44 meters.

Generally, they are a your normal low end hot water heater. I have seen American Standard units last up to 20 years (like mine) with not problems, and I have seen them not last three years before the tank ruptured.
We have more calls on the Rheem and Brandford Whites than American Standards as far an minor problems.
Pros: Cheap; reasonably reliable; parts readily available. Cons: Not energy efficient; tank quality - flexible.
When mine goes would I replace it with another American Standard? No, I would install the Bosch tankless water heater.
if you have a pilot light but no flame you need a thermo coupler very easy to change but you need
to turn the gas off and pull the gun out at the end of the gun the pilot light heats the thermo coupler
that tells the gun it has a flame at the end and its ok to turn on the gas for a flame home depot will
carry a new one for you
