When I turn the drive "on" nothing happens - no sounds or lights - just like nothing is there

if its an external usb drive

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red xright click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not workingports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem

type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

Then restart computer then check.

Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luckyou might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps

Retrieve information from external harddrive

You did not say if the external drive has died or malfunctioned. If you cannot plug the drive in and access it (My Computer on Windows, select the external drive), (On a Mac working drives automatically mount on the desktop, which Windows isn't smart enough to do.) Macs have a disk utility in the utilities folder (makes sense huh?) on Windows IF the drive shows up in My Computer you cam right click on it's icon and select Properties, then select tools and do a disk check. Once the drive is usable again just find the files you need and drag them to the main drive somewhere, or simply access them on the external drive without dragged the files over to the other drive.

How to open up 250GB Acomdata 3.5

You just have to hope that it is the case that is broken and not the hard drive. If it is the hard drive then it can be a very very expensive process to get the data recovered, if it is the case though, you can simply buy a new one, sometimes referred to as a 'caddy'. There should be some small screws holding it together, if you get really desperate you can carefully pry open the case unitl it breaks it (only if you don't want the case anymore of course). The other option is to get a sata/ide to usb cable set, and then you take the hdd out of its case then just use the cables to plug the hdd straight into a usb port. Hope this helped.

The computer not recognize the disk

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes
USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a
USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all
USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external
USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the
USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you don’t do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.

7. It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to check the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure.

8. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

9. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

10. Ensure that you have set removable drives for "quick removal" or that you use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option often shown on the lower toolbar. It is possible that files my not be fully written to external devices before they are removed. This corrupts the file itself and even on occasion the drive.
SPECIAL NOTES
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! And knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click of Death"

Hope this gives you the information you need

When I turn on the drive, the front pushbutton

Its sounds to me like the external unit has died. This seems to be a common problem with this manufacturer after about a year of use. In most cases the actual hard drive will be fine but it will have to be removed from the case in order for the data to be accessed.
