The problem is that the printer keeps giving me the error message that the front cover is open, but it is not open. I've tried opening and closing all the compartments to make sure they are snug. I've consulted the manual and all it says is to make sure that it is closed. What could be causing this error, and how do I fix it?
Most printers have a plastic pin on all of the covers that pushes a switch when it is closed. This then sends a signal to the printer telling it "I'm closed".
Probably the pin is broken off (quite by accident I'm sure). A solution is to push a piece of paper in the hole where the pin is, closing the switch, to fool the printer into thinking that the cover is closed. You can try this by pushing a pen point into the hole to see if the message goes out. (Don't forget to remove the paper when you open the cover. The switch is there to keep things out of the mechanism while it is running. May not hurt you but will damage the printer mechanics irreparably.)
Anything else is an error with the printer software and processor and can't be fixed easily.
