I just purchased a Ryobi cordless drill, and am having problem with the keyless chuck. Basically, when I try to unlock the chuck it is stuck and won't move, and it won't turn in the other direction either. As it is plastic, I don't want to use to much force in case I break it. What can I do?
Re: Ryobi P205 special from Home Depot:
Confusing at first, but easy fix:
The chuck is shipped in the UNLOCKED position (and tightly unlocked, too).
I gripped mine w/rubber gloves and turned toward LOCK direction. It freed up with some effort.
But that's the trouble, it is a bit confusing because you would think you need to unlock it, but it's already unlocked.
I had the exact same problem with a ryobi 18v hammer drill. I and three other guys tried unlocking the keyless chuck. none of us had any luck after a good ten minutes of trying. I went home, put on a pair of leather "WORKER" gloves. NOT the nice expensive ones my girlfriend bought me!
I held a strong firm grip on the collar and with the other hand I did the same on the chuck. Gave it a strong twist and on my first attempt it unlocked :D
It's surprising what a difference a pair of gloves can do.
Also if anyone else has a similar problem, try and use suede leather gloves. They have alot more grip than plain flush leather.
Hope I have been off help.
Soak it with WD40, other than that replace it, contact store for parts.

I just purchased the Ryobi 18v drill and I cannot loosen the chick either. I guess I'll go to Home Depot tomorrow and ask for help.
I just got mine open with some will power and leather gloves. It is very tight!!!
