Shuts off intermittently when only watching DVD's.

My HK AVR 120 will shut off at times when set on/about -10db. It only does this when in whatching DVD's. I don't know if this matters but when it was hooked up last time and in order to hear any audio on a DVD I have to select the select via the source button DVD then CD. If I were to select CD first or DVD by itself I get no audio. Any help is appreciated. I just rememebered soemthing else, intermittmently I will hear a loud pop/thud from what I believe is the powered subwoofer.

Thanks again for your help.

If you are comfortable opening the unit, try unplugging the sub board from the mainboard on the unit and then turn it on. If you get sound then you need to replace/repair the sub board.

Does this happen at modest or very high volumes? If the latter, is the amp getting hot? Just the two speakers? If yes, ease up. If NO, get it fixed.

Fiber Optic input

No gots. The 3485 is pre-digital stereo-only.

From the manual, page 19

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."

HK AVR 120 (left speaker not working)

Hi, your analysis are right, your speakers has no problem, the problem is in your receiver.
there are several factors that affects it, try some troubleshooting: and answer this questions:

1. During this event, what is the source of your INPUT audio signal?
Have you tried to replaced your RCA cables that connected to the source of your receiver?

If YES, then problem really exist in the internal system of your receiver. may be you have overdrive your receiver unintentionally, which cause the Power Amplifier to malfunction,

On this event, I would suggest that you bring your receiver to it's Service Center for repair,
This problem needs technical troubleshooting of a qualified technician.

Harmony remote with Harmon Kardon receiver

HK AVR 347-I took it back- everyone was frustrated and the verdict was that it just doesn't work. I have a Dennon now and it doesn't sound as good as the HK but it works most of the time. Not sure it the Harmony is the problem. I'm reading the Dennon manual now and it seems the Dennon remote can do what the Harmony is trying to do. Harmony support is awesome and we'll keep trying. Sooo- was there a trick to it?

Harman Kardon AVR 120 turns off by itself after normal work for about 1 min

Do you get an indication on the display where the point of failure might be? It would show up on the LCD speaker diagrams just before shutting off.

Protect -- Shuts off

It could be the speakers are at too low of an impeadance or a bad speaker. Check the bad of the receiver and see if it states the proper type of speakers to use. Most say "8 ohms to 16 ohms "A or "B" and "16 ohms or more "A + B". if your speakers are 4 ohm speakers that is your problem.

Let me know what you find out about the speakers. It says on the back of the speakers where the wires plug in what ohm rating they have.

Harmon kardon avr 125 shuts down

If you want to fix it:

It must be a contact problem arount the power switch, power cable, fuse or the condensator area.
Maybe you can se a black color on the board.
And checking the solderind points with a magnifyer can help too.

Thats all from that distence.
