I can get the unit to manually copy something in color using the Color Start button but cannot get anything to print off the computer except in black ink.
Some time ago I set the PaperPort setting to black and gray and cannot reverse it to PaperPort color. I've tried all I can before asking for help. I give up, it's been several hours of reading the manual and trying anything I can to make adjustments on the computer. Please help. Since I see no mention of PaperPort in the manual what is it?
Thank you!!

You have two choices to do that:
1. If you want to print in color sometimes in future again, do this:
Buy some glycerin alc. (drugstore) and some destilled water.
Mix 2 ml glycerin alc (or glycerol) with 8ml of destilled water and refill the ORIGINAL C/Y/M carts with the mix. (Drill a 2mm hole onto the top into the brandname).
The mixture prevents the color side of the ph from drying out.
2. If you dont want to print in color anymore:
stick some black adhesive tape around the "nose" of each cart.
The nose is the small window which hides a small black flag that signals the printer that the cart is in position and that there is enough ink within.

I had problems with my MCF 420CN in the past and I've found the best solution is to buy a new one from the Brother web store. The cost of a new machine is cheaper than buying a new set of ink cartridges. When the new machine arrives, I first use the cartridges from the broken machine and save the new ones as replacements for later use. Bottem line- new machine $49.99 versus cost of 4 ink cartrides $52

The print heads don't appreciate being out of ink so the Brother printer has sensors to prevent that but the tape defeated that prevention. Maybe more cleanings or maybe a cartridge with printhead cleaning solution will help. Otherwise, I fear a new printer.

I would try using a set of OEM cartridges. Make sure to run deep nozzle cleaning and alignment.
Some aftermarket cartridges are not as well quality controlled and tend to be inconsistent and gum up the nozzles.
If you need a source for good aftermarket cartridges try LD Products online.

Open the case,i don't sure were the cartridge is located but i think is easy to you to find it.When you found it, wipe the botton part of your cartridge use soft clothe for cleaning.Look at mannual to locate the cartridge.
