I am looking for a product manual for a JBL MR-25 Marine Radio. It is a 4x45 watt marine radio with CD player. I would like the owners manual and help with diagnostics as the boat was not in the water for 3 years, and now the radio does not function. It has power but no display or response to the "on/off" button. Any help will be appreciated.... Bob Longo

Thank you for your fine help, however I have found all these sites which are informational for the speakers, not the 180w stereo.
This unit looks similar to the picture above, again not an exact match.....
I will continue looking for the radio/cd unit manuals....
    Thank You again...

Thanks Tony,as you mentioned in your response the power/fuse issue is the first thing I checked.
Next, I removed the face and used contact cleaner on the unit/face contacts to insure good contact.
I like your idea about using a "reset" button, but I did not see one in the unit.
The disconnection of all power was naturally done when the batteries died over the winter in the boat.
Thanks again, and I think the head unit as you stated is done-for.....

Thanks Tony, you're probably correct in that it's time for a new unit.....

  • By no power do you mean you get no response from CD or radio out of the speakers when trying to use the radio? Should this be the case then I'd like you to check a few places.
  1. First look to make sure the wires in the back are not broke or the insulation has somehow been negated.
  2. Next is to check the power wires and ground wire. Look for an inline fuse anywhere between the battery and either power wires. One should always be installed to prevent a surge reaching the head unit so make sure to check for a fuse. Replace if blown with same size fuse, never bigger.
  3. Remove the face plate and notice the reset hole (last hole on the left) Take a pen or other pointed but not sharp item and stick it into that hole and hold for 10 seconded. Then retry.
  4. Make sure the contacts for the face plate where it hooks into the head unit are clean and don't have any grime buildup that would prevent any of the contacts from contacting.
  5. Next you can try removing all power wires and wait for 5 minutes and re-connect. Sometimes this will also reset the unit.
  • I know you asked for a manual. I don't have the exact one. I do have a similar one that I can offer. http://www.premiumleisure.com/Manuals/nov07/Hydro_Spa_JBL_Stereo.pdf
  • Your unit was discontinued and not made for long and this may be a part of why the manual is difficult to find... for free anyway it is. I can say I don't need a manual to help you determine why the unit is not powering on.
  • How are you determining has power but just not responding to the on/off button? A volt meter check to the wires perhaps at the back of the radio? If you get power to the wires at the back of the radio then double check your ground real well because if the ground is good then, at that point, the head unit is bad.
  • If you perform all the tests I stated above and still no dice then the head unit is bad. There is no "code" for the radio so that will not be a factor. It's really a process of elimination.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

JBL Marine MR-15B radio/cd player. When I press any button unit changes from mono to stereo and that is all it will do?

Question edited for clarity, proper 'make model (what it is)'.

I can't find a manual, but they have a common theme. Remove the faceplate and press the Reset Button, then clean the contacts both sides with electrical switch cleaner or Isopropyl Alcohol.

What size supply fuse

I = P/E Current = power/voltage
Therefore 25 watts of power divided by 12 volts if that is the battery voltage, equals about 2 amps. You should try a 3 or 4 amp fuse..

Won't read the CD's now

have you ever cleaned the lazer lens? goto any CD store and pick up a CD cleaner CD, it is a CD that you place a drop of cleaner on the brushes on the bottom of place it in the CD player and let it play, it will clean the lens that reads the cd, you might have to run it a few times if you have never done this before. that should fix the problem. the CD cleaners are not that expansive, can find them under $20...... hope this helps you..........

Transmits but does not Receive

Check your microphone by swapping with another duplicate. If no differance, you will need a SWR meter (standing wave ratio) to find the culprit. It attaches in line of the coax and determinds power out and reflected power. The reading should be 25 watts foward and max of 1 reflected.
