Are you sure there are no messages? There may be messages on your phone company's system. To access it, consult your phone book or contact the company.
Press the MESSAGE button and look at the display. It will tell you where the message is from, as in that other extension, and the 3rd soft key will let you CLEAR the message. Press it and it goes away :-)
It probably means the phone is in Do Not Disturb. There's a programming option to make it not do that. Check out the installation manual for your phone system.
