When you make the connection with HDMI are you changing the source or input key on the television to activate HDMI port? If you don't activate the corresponding source you connect to and leave the TV in the TV mode, you won't actually see the device you are connecting. It's possible the TV does not support the 1080P from your PS3.
I believe that the PS3 only supports one output at a time you could try unplugging the a/v cables and leave the hdmi cable inserted you should get picture and when you do change the settings of the PS3 to support 720p or 1080p as the quality will greatly increase.
1 - Turn on TV and set input to port being used.
2 - Make sure PS3 is connected via correct cable.
3 - Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release
after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to
the TV's native resolution for all settings.
Then after that change the output setting to HDMI on your PS3 and see if it works after that, if not, try the system on another TV to make sure its not a problem with your tv.
If it still doesn't work try another cable and then after that it could be a problem with the main board inside of the ps3.
Well, I won't take the credit of others. Many people have the same problem as you do.
