Try adjust the USB cable and/or switch which USB port it's connected to on your computer. Also just patiently let the player sit and try not to perform any other actions on the computer. When mine did this, I opened Media Player, wiggled the USB cable and waited. Eventually it connected and worked correctly.

I had the same problem. One day my Mp3 started acting weird and said it was not recognizing the files and that i needed to re download them. Try plugging it up to your computer while its charging and hit the power off. Then reset your mp3 with the button at the bottom and it should recognize it.

I had the same problem after using this product for a month, suddenly it showed the warning of write protection.
I even contacted the sony customer center but to no avail. their answer was of no help at all.
so here is what i did to make it work:
1) First install "QuickTime version 7.2" or later (you can download it from torrent if you are unable to register it, i.e. with a crack)
2) Then install "Windows Media Player 11 " (you can download it from torrent if you are unable to validate it, i.e. if WinXP not original)
3) Now install "Media Manager for WALKMAN" (a compatible software provided by the sony company to interact or communicate with the walkman), freely available for you to download at sony's website.
After the installation, connect the walkman to your computer. Now it should easily add or delete data from you walkman using this software or without it as well.

I remembered that I had another problem with Windows Media 11 that seemed impossible to fix until I found somewhere that uninstalling or rolling back WM11 to the previous version then reinstalling fixed the issue. I decided to give that a try with this problem we're having and sure enough it worked. The Walkman is now recoginized as a Portable Device under Device Manager and in My Computer it is displayed as a Walkman and not a removable disk.
All you have to do is use add/delete software, delete or rollback WM 11 and then either use the Sony disc with WM11 or download a new version. All together it only took a few minutes and I'm back in business. No music or playlists were lost. Try it and let me know if it works for you.

I had the same problem. For at least a week. Try pressing the reset button. The reset button won't delete your music, videos, pictures, etc. Just resets your system. If that does not work then i don't know what else to tell you.
