Spotting on IBM R40 TFT Screen

About 6 months ago, a small spot appeared on my IBM R40 laptop TFT screen. This spot grew in size to about 1inch dia. Now there are two such 1 inch dia spots on my screen at different places. The 2 black spots look like cells of ink have burst. Can you please urgently advise on whether I can self-handle this and how or whether I would have to give it to an IBM/Lenovo Service Centre for screen replacement and the cost approx. or other suggestion please. Thanks. Karl Lobo

As soon as anything appears on screen after power-on, press F1 (keep clicking it until the BIOS setup screen appears). The first option on the list is Date + Time, click on that, and enter correct date/time. Then press F10 to accept + reboot. If this error happens again, it means that the CMOS battery (which keeps your settings alive) has died; it is cheap + easy to replace, however you have an R40 model, and I avoid working on Rxx series so that job may be harder. I could point you to the R40 service manual, which is very good to dis-assemble that laptop (it is necessary to lift keyboard to get to CMOS battery, which involves removing some screws from the bottom.

Your red TFT panel is going bad. You would need to have the light engine replaced. Probably about $200 to $300 depending on the shop. Let me know how this works out.

The display on my ibm thinkpad r40 is black after initial dim ibm screen. External monitor works fine though. This happened immediately after I used my ibm with a projector this morning? Fn F7 does not...

The problem youve discribed does seem to point to your back light has failed on the laptops lcd display, i dont know exactly how this would accure just using a projector though, go into bios again and try loading factory settings.

This problem could also be the inverter if you cant make out even a slight image on the screen.

let me know what happens. thanks

IBM R40 Screen Problems

I think you have an inverter board thats just about dead. It's located in the screens plastic housing at the bottom of the screen just above the keyboard. It's about 4 inches long and a half inch wide. There's just one little cable connecting it. But you have to take your screen apart to get to it. It's easy to replace and relatively inexpensive but it does require a little disassembly skill.
Also ,I will need the exact part number from the bottom of your laptop. There are several different R 40 models, and 2 different screen sizes.

Problem with ibm thinkpad r40

The IBM beep code error 1 long 2 short beeps means there is a video card fault. Reseat your RAM because the video card uses some of the RAM. If it doesn't work then the video chip on the motherboard is faulty, the only way to fix is to replace the motherboard - this may not be a cost effective solution.
Connecting an external monitor to the laptop won't work because the video card also sends data to the video port.

Light green and pink spots on my hd tv!!!

Tiny particles of dust on the light engine lens can cause this (and was a service call for me about a month ago), or possibly the expensive light engine.

R40 screen is dead

Since a used R40 will be in the neighborhood of $300, a $100 or less for the screen might not be too bad of a price. Without the screen, you have a $330 paper weight. With the replacement screen, you have a working computer. And that would cost you $200 less than buying a replacement R40.
Hopefully this line of thought will help you make the decision.
