Because it's old sorry. this is just the way of many laptops. the only "light" in the tunnel is that it may be repairable and it might even be relatively cheap ($100 U.S.) but you will have to check the yellow pages and/or the news paper etc to find the guys that do it because the big computer stores will charge you ALOT more. hope this helps and good luck:)

White Screen - Unable to See Desktop GUI.

Two separate problems, sounded like..

White screen? If external video is okay then it's likely (1) a bad screen, or (2) a disconnected video cable.

If the system shuts down, I'd check the fan - if the fan is reasonably clean and running, then it's probably a bad motherboard.

SCREEN IS DARK

Dark screen may significate that the inverter board powering backlight lamp is faulty.

Check first the power settings, brightness settings, and ensure that battery is charging.

If settings and batteries are OK, then remains the faulty inverter board .

My lcd is dark

If your battery and power suplly are ok, then you have a problem with your screen inverter, or needs to adjust your screen settings. Cleck display settings at your control panel

My toshiba 1805-s74 will not turn on

Hi Russ,

Sometimes a laptop will appear in a ghost state, not off, or on if you sometimes shut it down, but close the lid too fast. Try pressing and holding the power button for 5-10 seconds. This should turn it off completely. Then give it a few more seconds and press the power button again to turn it back on.

Hope this helps!

Comes up a grey screen when I turn it on...

had same issue - on 1805-s253 - had to replace the inverter - there was a recall from Toshiba on that part for that series - you find sources for the part via a google of '1805-s253 inverter'
