I have oil leaking out my 491056 oil filter on my mtd lawn mower. I have not changed it in about 8 years could that be why it is leaking? or ? It is pretty much pouring out now. Was a small leak now a big leak....can't mower the yard without running out of oil.

Change you oil and while you are at it change the filter. Do not run until you have completed. You risk engine damage by loosing too much oil while running it.

How does it run? Is it back firing through the air filter box area? And although your stating it is oil is it actually oil or gasoline that is black due to getting dirty? Don't shoot me! I'm going on what information I'm reading what you submitted. If oil is it enough to show up quickly on the dipstick/engine oil level ? Get back to us and we can go further.

Changing oil in my mtd lawn tractor!! Was oil should I use? Where is the filter? How do I change it?

Most Mower engines have an oil drain plug located at the base of the oil fill tube or dip stick tube, Most mower engines use a standard 30wt engine oil, however, to stay within the parameters of your warranty, use the manufacturers reccommended oil, this info can be located in your owners manuel.

Oil change

Most push mowers, you just take out the filler plug and turn it on it's side to drain.Set the mower up on blocks so it rests 6-8" off the ground, place a large catch pan underneath for the oil.

Change Oil

All lawn mower engines have a drain plug for draining the oil. Look for a square nut on the side of the engine

Is there an oil filter on a Briggs/Stratton riding lawn mower. Model#42A700

Yes there is a spin on oil filter. Depending on the date code when the motor was built there are two possibilities. The easiest way is to measure the length of the filter, If the filter is 2 1/4" long the Part Number is 492932.
If the filter is 3 1/4" long, the Part Number is 491056.

Yard Machine MTD push lawn mower won't start

Sounds like you need a complete tuneup. Start with the carb. then clean all coil contacts, air filter and this will start you in the right direction. Good luck.
