I have a Lexmark X4650 printer. I was printing earlier this morning and then suddenly, the printer stopped working and gave the error message that left cartridge is incorrect (I haven't touched the cartridges and there is ink left in both). I've taken the cartridges out and put them back in, I've cleaned off the copper looking connections, and I've turned the printer off and back on. Any suggestions? The printer is 1 1/2 yrs old and am wondering if it hasn't just "died".

Good job in re-seating the cartridges into the printer. Try to insert a different known working cartridge to determine if your other cartridge has gone bad.

Are you getting any error msgs when you try to print? It's possible that you have a communication problem. Make sure that your computer and printer is able to talk. Since no details were provided, you can try to uninstall the Lexmark software and download an updated driver online at www.lexmark.com.
It seems that you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps to identify and fix the problem. But try to replace your black cartridge with a new genuine Lexmark cartridge to determine if it's a faulty cartridge issue. You may also contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.
Try to check the ink levels and make sure it's good for printing. Otherwise, please replace them with new cartridges. You can try to re-seat the cartridges in the printer then try to print your document again to verify that the print quality has improved.
Try to re-install the Lexmark X4650 driver. Visit the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/iofMNC. Select your operating system, download the driver and execute the file.
1. Make sure the printer is on. 2. Lift the scanner unit. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the printer is busy. 3 Press down on the cartridge carrier latch to raise the cartridge carrier lid. 4. Remove the used print cartridge.
Note: If you are removing both cartridges, repeat step 3 and step 4 for the second cartridge.

Hi Here are a few possibilities... 1. Try cleaning the contacts on the inkjet cartridge and where they make contact inside the printer. (use cotton wool and Alchol) if that does not work... 2. Pull out power cable from printer wait 1 MINUTE then insert cable and switch back on again. (some printers reset to factory settings) 3. Remove printer cable from computer... Uninstall Printer driver from computer... Switch off both printer and computer. Wait 1 minute... Reconnect cables and switch on printer and computer... Allow computer to find printer reinstall driver. 4. Try installing old cartridge to see if printer rejects that? 5. You may have a faulty inkjet cartridge (return it to store if so)
I did a web search and ended on a forum where everyone was complaining that they could not get drivers.
But one person (user name Arthur) said that the problem is solved by printing from a virtual machine that runs on top of Linux (for instance Virtual Box). Arthur claims that the printer worked through USB as well as WIFI. Sounds Neat.
