Wireless? I can connect with the cable to the back of the router but it says that the wireless is connected but will not browser or anything? P.S It asks for the WPA or WEP what does that stand for and where can I find it. I put in the IP address and it seemes to allow to connect but like before no pages.

  • urbie_22 Sep 02, 2008

I did this and for my connection by cable it works fine and I can get rid of the WEP, for my wireless there is no numbers for default gateway. This is maybe the reason my laptop will not pick up internet wirelessly. Also the icon of the wireless says I am not receiving any packets. Basically I need to understand how to open the default gateway for my wireless. Also I thing that it might have done this because I set up the router with the cord into my laptop. Any help with this would be appricated. Thanks.

WEP or WPA is a security sort of like a password to be able to connect to your router. Without this password you will not be able to connect and go online. To get the WPA or wep you need to access your router's set up page. Are you able to get online when directly connected to your router with a cable? If yes, connect ur computer back to the router using a cable, then click on start then click on run and type cmd then hit ok. Type ipconfig then press enter on the black screen assuming your using windows xp. Take note of the default gateway. Open the browser and type the default gateway numbers you take note on the address, no http or www, it will then ask you for username and password. Then from there you will be able to access your router's set up page. Look for a wireless tab then look for the security mode there either WEP or WPA and take note of the password or key.

Sir i lost my wireless network name and my wireless network password

to get back you wireless information, first you have to connect you laptop hard wired to the router using the ethernet cable, then open a browser and access the firmware of the router, usually for dlink routers, the default gateway to access the router is(10.0.0.1),but if you don't know the default gateway, you can go to the network connection by typing (ncpa.cpl) in the run box or the start search from the start menu. look for "LAN or Highspeed Internet or Local Area connection" then right click on it and select status. Note:make sure that the laptop is propperly connected via network cable.
you will have the "status" page.

for winXP: click on support tab and look for the "default gateway"

for win vista and win7: click on "details" button and look for "ipv4 default gateway"

The "default gateway" number including "dot" needs to be typed in the address bar of your browser.
The router then will ask you to enter the username and password, which is located in the back on side of the router. After you got to the router page, on the left pannel, click on "wireless settings" there you will see you wireless information.

How to change your wireless network password. Forgotten wireless password.

Hi. Thanks for looking!

Due to the fact that many questions are being asked about routers and wireless networks I decided to put little tutorial together .

· How to change my routers password (forgotten password)

Since you forgotten your password and can not connect to wireless network you will need an Ethernet network cable in order to connect to router.

Before doing anything else switch your computer on and make sure that your router is on also.

1.
Connect Ethernet cable to your routers free port at the back and the other end to your PC/Laptop network port.
Once you get confirmation that you are connected to the network (you should notice this in the task bar right lower corner of the screen)

2.
Open your internet browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address box and press enter. If this don'ttake you to the site asking for username and password please do the following.Click Start and choose run (below search) type "cmd" in the box and press enter. This should start a command prompt where you need to type in "ipconfig" and press enter. This should show you information's about your network. Default gateway address will be an address that you need to type in your browser box.

3.
Once you get to the login page, provide your username and password. You should be able to find this in your manual for router but if you can't you can find it hear--->click hear.

4.
Please note that since there's so many router vendors instructions in step 4 may vary, but these are basic.-
When you logged in to your router settings page please find wireless tab and choose security. Get to the password box and change password to whatever you like.

5.
Remember to save changes before quitting. Now unplug your cable and try to connect to your network wireless, using your new password.

Bravo! You just completed password change.

  • Open your Web browser then check your product manual for the Web address you need to enter.
  • Enter the Web address, then enter the user name and password supplied in your manual.
  • Enter the required setup information. You'll need to call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for this information if you don't have it already.
  • Choose the connection type you want from the drop-down menu labeled "WAN Connection Type." The connection type you need will depend on the information you receive from your ISP.
  • Click the "Apply" button to save your settings, then close the browser window.
  • Reset the power on your modem.
  • Restart your computer.
How to configure netgear wireless router.
  • Connect your high-speed modem to the Netgear wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Turn off and unplug your high-speed modem's power before connecting the device to your wireless router. Plug the Ethernet cable that was connected to your high-speed modem into the "Internet" port on the back of your Netgear wireless router. This port is located next to the wireless router's power port and is designated by a green color.
  • Connect your computer and the Netgear wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Shut down your computer before connecting it to your wireless router. Plug one end of the short, blue Ethernet cable that came with your Netgear wireless router into your computer's Ethernet jack. Plug the other end of the cable into a LAN port on the back of your wireless router. Your wireless router will have several numbered LAN ports, designated by a yellow color. It does not matter which LAN port you use.
  • Turn on each device in order. First, power up your high-speed modem, then wait at least 2 minutes. This allows it time to connect to your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) server. Make sure that your high-speed modem's status indicators show that it has successfully connected to your ISP's server. Next, plug the Netgear AC power adapter into the Netgear wireless router and a power outlet. The AC power adapter plugs into the back of the wireless router in a black-colored port labeled "Power." Wait at least 2 minutes for your wireless router to connect to your high-speed modem. You will know that it has successfully connected if all of the status lights on the front of the wireless router are on. Finally, turn on your computer.
  • Open your Web browser and connect to the wireless router's URL. In the address bar of your browser, type in the wireless router's address. The Netgear wireless router addresses are: http://www.routerlogin.net, http://www.routerlogin.com or http://192.168.1.1. You can use any one of these URLs. Press "Enter" on your keyboard once you have typed in the address.
  • Input the default user name and password. The default user name is "admin," and the default password is "password." The text boxes are case-sensitive, so it is important that you use lowercase letters.
  • Follow the Setup Wizard instructions. Once you log into the router, a Setup Wizard will load and ask if you want it to detect your Internet type. Click the "Yes" radio button, then click "Next." Once you have completed the wizard, configuration is complete, and you can access the Internet using the wireless router.
  • Configure wireless settings. If you have wireless devices that you want to connect to your Netgear wireless router, you must access your wireless settings. Log into the wireless router as described in Steps 4 and 5, then find and click the "Wireless Setting" link on the main menu. You can change the default SSID (wireless network name) from "NETGEAR" to a custom name, and you can change security settings such that a passcode is required to log onto your wireless network. When you finish changing your wireless settings, click "Apply." You must use this SSID and passcode to connect your wireless devices to your Netgear wireless router.

The wireless internet connection wont work. we previously had a wireless connection and now it wont register. we lost the connection completely and it doesnt show up on the list of internet connections....

Try turning off the router for 30 secs, then power it up again.
Then try connecting a LAN cable from the computer to the router and see if you can connect to the Internet.
If you can connect to the Internet then -
With the LAN cable open a browser and type in the configuration URL and check the Wireless settings, then check and/or the wireless card settings (it should have the router's SSID and encryption settings etc.)
Also install the latest wireless card driver.
Then test the wireless and Internet connection. If this doesn't work -
Next connect the computer with a LAN cable to the cable or DSL modem to see if you can connect to the Internet.
If you cannot get an Internet connection with the LAN cable, contact your ISP and get them to test the connection to your modem.
If the modem and Internet is OK and you still cannot get a wireless connection then the problem could be a faulty wireless router.

I have the RCA DCM425C cable modem and also Vonage phone service. So my modem ethernet connects to my Vonage internet. I would like to go wireless in my house. How would I do this?

You would connect from the output of the Vonage modem to the wireless router and then from the wireless router you can connect Ethernet to your desktop if you have one and then anything else can run off of the wireless.

or

get a wireless router / cable modem combo provided by companies such as netgear then you would connect the Vonage to the router through one of the available Ethernet ports and any other Ethernet connections to the router as well and anything else wireless would work wireless.

Lost disc to install linksys wireless-G, what do I need to do in order to get wireless on my new laptop without disc?

Depends. You could try clicking on the Wireless Networks icon and connect to your network.

If you've never had wireless working on anything before, you could try logging into 192.168.1.1 from another computer connected to the router and turn on the wireless.

I didn't notice that either of these solutions needed the CD, nor did they ever.
