Mixer is still going but making a popping noise. Also has a burning smell - maybe a wiring problem?

Your best option is to replace a 25 year old appliance. the cost to repair will far exceed the monetary value of mixer.

Tanya, it sounds like there might have been a short to ground, that is when a wire comes loose and touches the housing. So you will definitely have to rewire/fix the wiring in the mixer, there is a wiring diagram in the KitchenAid service manual (http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf)

There may have also been damage to the speed control plate or phase board, either part would have burn marks on it in most cases.

Look in the oven, the cake may be burning. If the smell is from the mixer it could be a capacitor burning out, it could be a fault on the PCB, it could be a poor connection in the wiring, it could be a faulty armature, it could be faulty field windings, it could be a bush or bearing nipping up. If it's not amongst that list try getting back with more information.

It sounds like it could be an issue with the gear, the motor housing could have a crack in it. The problem could be much more involved as well. Put the unit on the slowest speed and see if you can stop the mixer from spinning. If it hiccups or stutters, that means you have a stripped gear. If you cannot stop the unit using your hand ON THE SLOWEST speed then there could be a problem with the motor housing or the motor itself not being held in place properly.

You have broken the intermediate gear in the head. This gear can be a bit of a problem to change. Here is the parts manual for the KSM150PS.
The part is probably #6, worm gear.
Check with Kitchenaid on where to buy parts.

I needed to replace the nylon worm drive in my mixer. When I put it back together, I found that my mixer made a kind of grinding noise. The noise was due to a vibration associated with the cover for the electrical wiring in the back of the mixer. I solved my noise simply by loosening the screw to this cover. The cover is located on the back of the mixer, and the screw is on the top.

First disconnect the power, and remove the carbon brushes again. They will only go in one way and if incorrectly placed inside the unit, the mixer will not operate even if you fix the problem. If the brushes are correctly placed inside the mixer then this problem will most likely be caused by the main control board. You can check this visually by removing the back panel with the power removed. Once you remove this you can see the main board, visually inspect it for any burn marks and also smelling for ant burned wires can prove useful. Part number for the main control is W10119326. Hi sometimes, its not the motor, maybe its the speed control, in this model same A701 its centrifugal system, if the capacitor or resistor not working fine, give this smell . you must give your Kenwood for repair or check

There is the possibility that if the mixer is 30 years old and it has never been serviced that the gasket around the gear case is leaking oil and in that case it would not be hard to get liquids on the armature or the stator as the gear grease in the transmission is vegetable base grease and it separates into liquids and solid and when the head is tilted up the failed gasket allows the separated oil to leak down and to the rear onto the mixer right onto the motor parts. It maybe nothing more that cleaning out all the old grease and re-packing and adding a new gasket.
