Shutter speed I am new to digital cameras and I just purchased a Sony fd-83. The specifications say that the min shutter speed is 1/8 second and the max shutter speed is 1/4000 s. Nowhere in the manual or on the camera can I find how to adjust the shutter speed. Can someone help? Thanks Till

Your're probably using a flash with TTL disabled. So 1/200 is the highest sync possible with that kind of flash. Did you try removing the flash off the body and setting faster shutter speeds?

A black shadow at the bottom of the image is usually the result of using a shutter speed that is beyond the max flash sync speed of your camera. The max sync speed of the 5D and 20D is 1/200th. In a studio setting with wireless triggers there can be additional latency. Try using a shutter speed of 1/125th and see if that clears it up. You may be able to push it a little higher as pocket wizards are very good wireless triggers but don't use a shutter speed above 1/200th.

Almost any new digital camcorder will work great, but you want to make sure it has a high speed shutter setting.  Set the shutter speed as high as possible (which means you'll need a lot of light... day light is perfect).  You're still only shooting 30 frames per second, but each shot will be sharper (less motion blur) as the shutter speed increase.  High-end cameras can go up to as much as 1/10000th of a second, but even 1/500 would be great.  Standard, default shutter speed is 1/60th.
For playback, you can use the same camera with a remote control.  Just press play, then just before the swing press pause.  Then use the frame advance button to move 1 frame at a time.  Multiple presses of the frame button will increase the speed... to slow motion.

use 'Program Shift'. This will change the values for both aperture & exposure, but keep the overal exposure value correct. Eg if the standard values are 1/60th of a second at f5.6, then rotating the dial in one direction will change the parameters (first) to 1/30th & f8, etc, and turning it in the other direction will change them to 1/125th & f4.

Take a good working penlite...and LOOK inside the slot to see if there's some foreign object in there.

There is absolutely NO way to use a Memory Stick with the FD83 camera. The floppy adapter will never work with a FD83. The camera OS does not have the required driver.

I also, almost always use the low lux modes with that cam, that is, when I have a tripod or can keep the camera steady. Oh, and it s$cks for action shots, but for stills its great. I find that the lox lux mode actually reduces noise in addition to brightening the image and making the colors pop. Who woulda thought? It's a nice feature to have when the onboard flash is useless. Anyway, this mode apparently does use a longer exposure seeing how you get blur as the shutter speed is dropped. I'd say its around 1/3 to 1/15 of a sec (I wouldn't think it to be longer than 1 second). I really don't have a clue as its a preset, though. But, again, that mode saved that camera from being crapo (like the earlier ones before it), despite its limited uses (stills).

No, 8 sec. is the max. goto the S (shutter priority)or M (manual)setting on the camera and use the black wheel with your thumb to set the shutter speed.

The Interlace Scan (IS) mode the camera uses a mechanical shutter with shutter speeds up to 1/640th second. It also uses the maximum resolution that is possible with the CCD (5.0 MP). In the Progressive Scan (PS) mode the camera operates with the electronic shutter with shutter speeds up to 1/4000th second and a 1/18000 second shutter speed (1/18000 in Shutter or Manual Priority modes only). In this mode the resolution is reduced in half (2.5 MP).
