Philips 60 I was told by a repairman my blue color tube was broken and I also needed a new convergence board. Where can I buy these and do this myself (never fixed a tv before) I can not afford to pay over $900 to fix my TV. I find it hard to believe this broke so soon it is only 2 yrs old. Tv guy said he has never seen this model last more then 4 to 5 years and to be glad I had gotten 2 yrs out of this tv. Help my kids loved this tv and now we are watching a tiny 13 inch tv from the basement I kept for an emergency! Thanks Susan By the way I love your motto!

First of all, this is a major labor intensive repair on Philips TV's changing the blue CRT because the new CRT does not come with the coolant that is sealed between the lens and the tube.If you have never done this type of repair before you should not attempt. Changing the convergence board is one thing (you can solder in two STK392-120 IC's and repair the board instead)
but changing the CRT's can be a nightmare. If you are brave go to PARTSTORE.com and get the parts $600+ (I would order the service manual too...you will need it)

Tv will not turn on

If it is a convergence issue, you can unplug the cable that connects the two boards all the way toward the front. If the tv comes on with a VERY bad picture(no convergence) then your problem is in the convergence ckt. If not, you could have problem with your small signal board. Also, the "yellow" problem you are having is that the cooling fluid in your blue tube is getting cloudy and needs to be changed.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Convergence problems with model#9P6040C101!

They are large black colored IC's with the markings of STK392-xxx (xxx could be 110,120,150) There could be open resistors as well and you have to make sure if you do replace the IC's that you apply heat sink compond to the back of them otherwise they will prematurely fail.

Blue Convergence Problem

see if the leads from the green crt Pcb on the green crt is long enough to reach the blue crt. If you hook up the working green circuit to the blue tube and it still dosent light up On the screen, then you know the tube is bad. Just a quick way to test crt's,. If it does light up then you have to trouble shoot the matrix for the blue tube. The drive maynot be vorrct the g2 voltage maybe not enough so then the screen block could be bad. I just wanna warn you against the very very high voltage inside these sets even when there not plugged in. BE CAREFULL PLEASE
