An impact wrench works in the manner suggested by the name of the tool: through the principle of impact. In order to understand how an electrical or air-powered impact wrench works, it helps to know first how a manually powered impact wrench operates. A manually powered impact wrench looks like a fat screwdriver; on the end where the screwdriver blade normally goes, you can snap on screwdriver bits or sockets.

Will 3.8cfm @90lb pressure air compressure 10 gallon 125psi work with impact wrench at average air consumption 8cfm

Air tools demand volumes of air; a 10 gallon is good for something like a finish nailer, or staple gun, or even a nail gun.
It will run the impact wrench, just not for very long, like 10 to 12 seconds if you're lucky.
Most compressors tell you what types of tools they are made for.
And impact gun is best matched with a 21 - 26 gallon compressor.

Robert,

From your description, it sounds as though the air wrench may be dry. What that means is that you need to oil the wrench through the air chuck attachment. Turn the wrench over and add several drops of air tool oil which you can get at most tool stores or home improvement centers. Then re-attach the air supply and try the wrench again. If the wrench has not been oiled for a long time, it's possible that the rotor or vanes are seized, in which case the tool will need to be dismantled and the vanes and/or rotor and bearing might need replacement. If that's the case, you'd be better off replacing the wrench. Make sure you have enough air pressure to run the tool. Air tools should be oiled frequently, expecially if they are used with un-dried compressed air or if they see heavy use.

One other thing - make sure the reversing switch is not in "mid" position and is either in forward or reverse.

Good luck sir

Impact wrench will not reverse

Hi sureputtcup...

Try this solution:
Spray some WD40 into the air intake of the impact wrench and then hook up your air hose to the wrench...run it a few seconds in forward....then after running in forwards for a few times, disconnect the wrench again, and again spray a small amount of WD40 into the air intake of the wrench...again run in forward...after running in forward again, then try to reverse the rotation...turn to reverse..
This will sometimes free up the vanes and sticky parts and allow the wrench to work properly.
If this does not work then you will need to disassemble the wrench and clean and oil and reassemble.

I have an old craftsman impact gun model number 875-188992. what size compressor do I need for taking off lug nuts/automotive work?

The two most important specs are CFM at 90 psi (that's how fast the compressor can compress more air when the tank starts to run low) and how big the tank is. Virtually any compressor that has a top pressure rating 20 psi higher than you need for your tool (which is usually about 90 psi) and that has a tank of a couple of gallons will work. But the smaller the tank, the shorter time you can operate the tool before the compressor has to kick in. And the lower the CFM at 90, the longer you will have to wait for the tank to come up to pressure again so you can operate the tool at full pressure. If this is for occasional use and you aren't in a hurry, you don't need much of a compressor at all. If you want to operate continuously, then you should get something with a CFM at 90 psi that is higher than your tool's CFM consumption. Keep in mind that impact wrenches don't operate continuously like paint sprayers do. Good luck. Vote if you found this helpful. Al K

Wrench Support

An impact wrench also requires a few special accessories. An air-powered impact wrench runs off of an air compressor with a tank – the air compressor should have at least a 10 gallon tank and be able to generate at least 3hp. Also, an impact wrench requires special sockets that are designed to withstand the high torque applied by the wrench.
