Downloading from pre-firewire 3CCD camcorder

I have an old Panasonic 3CCD camcorder that does not have a digital hookup, although the video quality is great. I'm going to be getting a new computer with lots of RAM and HD space and I'd like to start editing on my computer. I'm assuming I can just use any camcorder with a firewire connection (i.e., not necessarily a 3CCD unit) to transfer the video I've recorded with the 3CCD camera without any degradation in quality. Am I wrong?

In most cases there isn't degradetion of quality, but it won't be a digital quality. Meaning, you will get the same quality you are getting with an analog camera, but not a digital image. Daniel

Hi. That little black cable is a DV cable. It's also called FireWire. You have to get that at your local electronics store, or you can get one off the web.

Camcoder problem

The USB port on the camera is to download still pics from the Camera's SD Card to your computer. USB connector is not for video downloading.

For video downloading you have to use FireWire port. Your computer must have a FireWire port too. You will need some sort of video downloading software - like Microsoft's MovieMaker. There are some free software to download videos from mini dv camcorders to computer. It takes 1Hr to download 1Hr tape - you have to play it all to record it all. You will need video editing software to do different editing if you want. Otherwise, MovieMaker can make a good avi file. You can upload that to YouTube.

3yrs ago when I purchased this cam, I did not have FireWire port in my computer. I searched online a lot and found a way to download video using USB - it was tough, complicated. It was possible, but quality was too bad and too many dropped frames.

If you do not have firewire port, google for FireWire PCI Card, should be <$10. You have to install it inside your PC. Also search for FireWire cable ($10+/-) that will match BOTH camera and PC ports.

Thank you.

Connect to laptop using vista ultimate and firewire

I checked on Panasonics USA support website and neither of these two model numbers appear.

Here is the link to the support page:

http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Drivers-and-Downloads/list-Digital+Camcorders

There is a phone number to Panasonic support on this page as well as the international link if they were purchased outside the US.
