That is very strange. In Windows 7 you can configure the speaker configuration, but by default I think it is set to Stereo and I am not even sure mono is available. Are you certain you plugged the speakers fully? If the plug is half inserted you will get this effect.
try flashing the bios but before you do i need to know what kind of error you are having. it could be a bad disc try putting the driver on a flashdrive downloaded from ASUS first then flash the BIOS if all else fails.
After re-installing your OS, install ALL CHIPSET DRIVERS before you install the audio drivers. You need to have the chipset drivers loaded before the Audio driver if you are using onboard sound.
