I'm trying to install my HWU300 wireless adapator on a windows 7 machine, but the only drivers I can find go op to windows XP. Is this device compatible with windows 7?

Disconnect it, remove any software that was installed and restart the computer. Do not connect the device until you finish installing the device's software or the software installation prompts you to connect the device.
If that doesn't work, here's Microsoft's solution:

You have to download and install the driver for windows 7 ..To do that you should access the support site of the manufacturer..If they have no driver for it ..it means the device is not compatible with windows7 or the driver was not issued yet ..(In this case try the driver for Vista ..should work OK )

First of all, make sure your wireless device is powered on.


Then if problem continues, go to Control Pane->Device Manager and make sure your wireless device is installed correctly. the wireless device mustn't have any notification icon(yellow, red). For example in this image wireless device is installed correctly


If your device has a yellow icon that means your device isn't installed correctly. You need to reinstall wireless driver. If you have drivers CD install drivers from it. If you don't have CD, You can download driver from the following link:
If your OS is windows 7 click here If your OS is windows xp click here If your OS is windows vista windows 7 driver will work. So download windows 7 driver.
After you download unzip package and launch installer. Follow installation instructions, restart your pc and you are done.

If you have the Windows Vista or Windows XP driver, try installing in Compatibility Mode. Here's a tutorial I've posted recently (click HERE.), but please select Windows Vista instead of Windows XP. There isn't problem even if you select Windows xp, but since it's windows vista driver, that should work perfectly.

This is unfortunately a common issue with "older" devices with Windows 7 not supporting a compatible device driver:. Your best chance is to install Windows XP in a Virtual Machine under windows 7: the free ''VirtualBox'' virtual machine is what I personnaly use for my incompatible devices.

The driver you are talking about is a WLAN driver [wireless] for Windows XP. It was built to recognize and to be installed UNDER WINDOWS XP ONLY!
So:
1. if you are trying to install it under a different operating system [Vista or Windows 7] won't work;
2. if you have a machine running Windows XP and the driver itself is corrupted you can get it from HERE.

The WUSB54GSC adapter had been out of production for a while...the last driver update was for Windows XP in 2008 (for Version 2 devices). You should carefully examine the device to see if it is Version 1 or Version 2, as this is necessary when visiting the driver page.

If you're trying to use the adapter on a Windows 7 machine, and Windows 7 does not automatically install the driver, then you're pretty much out of luck as Linksys does not supply a Windows 7 driver for this unit. They don't list a Vista driver, either, although often XP drivers will transfer to Vista without difficulty.

So...if you're trying to install it on a Vista machine, try downloading/installing the XP driver for your device version...it MAY work. If that does not work, or if it's a Win 7 machine, time for a new adapter.

Most new computers these days (at least laptops) have wireless built-in and don't need a USB adapter. I'm assuming, therefore, that you're using this on a desktop. If so, and you need a new one, very good quality ones can be had at WalMart for around $20. Just be sure whatever you buy is compatible to your operating system. It will be printed on the packaging.

you should check the compatibility of the drivers you are installing with your windows xp, it may be designed for vista or 7, then If it is already compatible, try to plug the card first and then run the setup.

Windows 7 (Beta) and Windows Vista 64 Bit. Step 1. Do not allow the autostartup to run the installation application. You must right click on the CD ROM and select the "OPEN" option. Locate the driver on the install CD. Since my DVD ROM drive is my "D:" drive I located the driver at D:\USB_VISTA32364\BACKUP_2WIRE_VISTA_USB_Installer.exe . Before you click on this you want to right click on this and select Properties. In the properties tab click on the middle tab marked "Compatibility". Make sure you select the checkmark box to: Run this program in compatibility mode for: and use the pull down menu to select Windows XP SP2. This is how I was able to get my 2wire utility to work on Windows 7 (beta) 64 Bit.
