I have a Technics 1200MK5 It just started having pitch control problems. It works fine for 10 minutes or so but then if i go to -8 the platter starts to stutter you can see the dots jumping back and forth. After a longer period i seem to start having two 0 points at 0 and +2 Is this a recalibrate or replace situation or worse?

There seems to be 2 issues with this unit. Usually when the platter speeds up very quickly, one of the IC (integrated circuits) are faulty and needs to be replaced. However, I've never seen the 33/45 lights come on in addition. So, perhaps the issue started with faulty 33/45 switches, and it then caused a short to one of the IC's.

This will have to be professionally serviced, as it is not an easy fix. There are various circuits on the main board which control the drive, so it's a matter of diagnosing which is the culprit. The 33/45 switches will also need to be tested/replaced.

Hi, could just be platter not fitted hard down on spindle. I suggest you remove the platter and place it upon a dead flat surface to check to see that the platter is flat. If it is flat refit to turntable ensuring it is hard down on the spindle. If bent discard and replace with new platter.Platters can be ordered for all model 1200/1210 from [email protected]

Technics SL-1200MK5 voltage or fuse problem

To change it from the 110 to 220 the switch is under the turntable platter. Put your fingers in the 2 holes under the slip matts and pull up evenly. It may be a little hard but it will come off. As for the fuse...its inside the deck. Unscrew the feet and all the screws. the black rubber part will come off. Good luck!

Pitch and Strobes

There is nothing wrong with your turntables. The Strobe dots are only a guide to give you an idea of the speed your platter is rotating. Nothing more, nothing less. The pitch control decal is not 100% accurate, it is simply a guide to tell you where the 6% position lies, 3.3%, etc.

As long as the quartz lock function works, and the large middle strobes are nice and solid, and do not move, your fine.

Broken pitch control

Yep, time to replace the pitch control. You can attempt to do this yourself, however good soldering skills are required (not the time to learn). You will have to desolder the old pitch control, and solder on the new one. Which is why I say, now is not the time to practice soldering on your turntable. You could actually cause more damage.

If after replacing the pitch control, you still have the same issue, then there is something wrong with the drive on the unit. The drive is controlled by various integrated circuits (IC's), and they are known to short out every now and then. The problem is isolating the correct IC. FYI, Technics is starting to discontinue parts, and 1 of the main IC's on this unit is no longer available (IC302 - Nand Gate).

You can order the PITCH CONTROL HERE.

More platter problems

There is no simple solution for this type of repair. One of the drive circuits has gone bad on your unit. This is a common problem, unfortunately, not a simple one. The hard part is finding out which circuit has gone bad. There are a total of 8 various components on the main board which control the drive sequence on the 1200s. Anyone of these, or a combination of a few, could have gone bad.

If you have access to a multimeter and know how to use it, you should be able to tech the issue rather quickly, and I would suggest obtaining the service manual for the exact specs of each circuit. If not, you will need to take it to a qualified service center for diagnosis.

If someone tells you it's your pitch control, it's not. The pitch control will not cause this type of problem. It's either one of the IC's, the resistors, or diodes.
