We've noticed small white flecks of some substance that, quite frankly, resembles small white flecks of paint, showing up in the bottom of our cups after drinking a glass of ice water. We think that it may actually be coming through the ice, as opposed to the dispenser. We did have our ice maker replaced a few months ago and we've really only noticed this problem recently. Not sure what to do or what this stuff is. Ever hear of this before? Any thoughts? Our whole family uses this ice and water!

On advice from the tech I removed acess door. It was covered by frozen moisture.
I removed the motor it was full of water. I verified 120 volts at plug to motor from control
by depressing the door switch and ice dispenser lever at same time. The motor ohms out
but because of amount of water removed from it I am going to replace it and see what happens.

Under the right side of the fridge in the back there is a dual valve for water and ice. Try changing it out, most likely the ice side is not working. Make sure you unplug the unit first
SOURCE: ICE MAKER QUIT MAKING ICE ON MY WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE
I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

change your water filter its probably full of dirt and plugged

Two things come to mind.
First, the water valve at the bottom rear of the refrigerator may have failed. You didn't mention if there is a water dispenser and whether or not this is still working. This valve pumps water to the icemaker and water dispenser when the control unit of the icemaker calls for water. Also, there could be a blockage in the line which brings the water to the icemaker.
The other possibility is that the part of the icemaker controls which calls for water from the valve has failed. If this has happened, it would likely be more cost effective to replace the icemaker unit.

I'm having the same problem and I definitely think it comes from the ice because I don't see the flecks when drinking water without ice. We make ice in plastic ice cube trays using filtered water. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Same problem with our Whirlpool - came with the new house (purchased 10/07). I don't think it's in the water - has to be in the ice - in the part that makes the ice - before hitting the bin.
We are having the same problem with white flecks in our side by side Hot Point. I know for sure it is from the ice and not just the water, because I have checked the water (all clear) and then checked the water again when I put in ice (white flecks). I have even run the ice under sink water for a little bit and then put it into a glass of water to make sure it wasn't something just on the outside of the ice. The white flecks still appear. We even changed our filter. Nothing is helping. I am thinking there is a different line feeding the ice tray than is feeding the drinking water and it might have something to do with that line.
