sounds like the bios battery is dead , it looks like a watch battery and may be soldered to the motherboard. I would trash it and get something newer. any new android phone or tablet would be better.I would suggest the 7 inch fire tablet for $50
I suggest to run your computer on safe mode by restarting your computer and press F8 when booting to load the fixed some error and driver conflict. Then windows setting will load and restart again. See if this solve your problem.
you can try to reinstall Win in another drive on the machine....i.e.. if you have a partition on the harddisk then you can try to install Win in a drive other than the usual C: drive in which you current OS is loaded...then when u boot the machine after installing the OS in say D or E then chose the OS to load when it give the optin on the DOS sceeen...by this you can recover all you critical files and then do a clean install again after formating you entire HD in C: drive....

If able to load win XP or any operating system that mean your system is booting and is in good condition. if there is issue with load of OS in normal mode then you try using last used configuration. follow this steps
1) keep press F8 when bios screen goes off until you see win xp option
2) then choose "last used configuration".
it will try to boot the system even though the system does boot properly then repair the os by booting xp dvd or cd from cd & dvd drive.
i hope this will resolve the issue.
Start the computer, and watch for the screen at the bottom to indicate to press F11 or to run setup. Once here, You'll see a file menu. Press F9 on each one and save the defaults. Once you reach the last, Exit Menu, press F9 and press yes to save defaults.
Press Exit again, and exit saving settings.
The computer will restart again. If the OS (operating system) does not load still, restart the computer again, and press F1, or the indicated F command shown at bottom of screen to go into Loading List.
This list will allow you to start the computer and operate in "Safe Mode". NOTE: some programs will not operate or run in safe mode,however you should be able to downlaod the appropriate driver.
If this does not work, insert the Operating System CD and re-install from the start - if you are prompted for repair or install, select Install.

My MP600 came up error 306 for no reason. I unplugged everything and plugged it back in again (I found a clump of dust at the USB port on the hub, which could have been involved) - the printer worked again no problem.
If you have the mac os install cd, try physically taking out the hard drive from your battery bay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c6ckjy-gdY) close up the bay and turn on your mac without the hard drive in place, while the chime is heard press and hold the alt/option key to get a list of bootable devices, ie. the install cd. Select the cd when the cd loads, go to the menu at the top and select startup disk, follow instructins to get your computer to atomatically start from the cd on next restart.
Select the restart option by cancelling th install. AFTER THE COMPUTER SHUTS OFF IT WILL RESTART, DO NOT LET IT RESTART, TURN IT BACK OFF IMMEDIATELY.
Now take out the battery-bay again and put the hard drive back in. Put everything back together and turn the computer on again. This time it should automatically load the install cd if it is stil in the drive. When it loads the installation you should be able to find a way to either use disk repair to put a startup image back on the hard drive or completely reinstall the OS on the hard drive (which it will recognize now)..

Assuming this is a real TIVO and not an NDS DVR which are sometimes called "TIVO's". The delete everything and start over in effect reinitializes (or formats) the Hard Disk Drive. Since many problems can be attributed to software, this is making the assumption it IS a software issue.
If the system kernel and/or associated utilities or the MFS file system are in some manner corrupted, they would give you this hang indication. The Drive would have to be reformatted and the kenel would have to be reinstalled. This is a tedious process that must be performed on a computer running the Linux OS since the TIVO OS is Linux based. There are several internet resources that have free software to download to perform this process. If you have no other TIVO drive to swap out to check that this is the issue, you could buy a new preformatted and loaded drive for your system. www.weaknees.com is a reliable source for TIVO replacement drives and are resonable.
