I bought a Ryobl Power Drill 14.4volt last week at a D.I.Y. store and have found when charging the batteries the light on the charger is Yellow. In the instruction manual they only mention Red when charging and Green when fully charged. What is the Yellow light for? Thank You.

Yellow usually indicates a HOT battery and is waiting for a cool down before recharging or it can mean a defective battery/charger. If you just bought this unit I would take it back for warranty replacement.

Black & Decker Cordless Drill will not charge battery

Either the charging adapter is faulty or the battery is worn out.

If the recharageable battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

I have a black & decker pivot plus that will not charge. How do I know if I need a battery or if I need a charger?

Batteries are only good for about a year, if they are older than that, take them back to the store and see if they are guaranteed at all, (all Ryobi tools and batteries have a date code on them, and they are all guaranteed for 2 years, a little plug for Ryobi,) that is all I buy now days, they work great. So, to check your charger, you will need a volt meter set on 12 or 20 v dc, and see if the charger is putting out, if not, then, the cost of a new ryobi might be the same as the fix for the black and decker. That is if you use the thing, we use our cordless tools every day and charge them every night, hope this helps.

I have 19.2 volt EX battery. My charger said batteries are defected. Salesman said if batteries are not charged every 3-6 months they get a bad cell and go bad. Is this correct?? If neither battery was in...

Hi Betty,

Batteries start deteriorating the day they are made. I have three drills exactly like yours. I have found the batteries last longer if they are exercised and I fould that even then, batteries don't last much past the 2 1/2 - 3 year point. Sadly, it is cheaper to purchase a new drill kit that has a new drill, a new light and two new batteries than it is to buy new batteries.

Whats the answer? Exercise your batteries ... don't store them on the charger ... let them run down once in a while then charge them up again.

The drill is on the base but the battery lights are not coming on and it won't charge. It has been on the charger all night and hasn't charged at all. It worked fine up until now. I've only had it for...

You should check first using multitester, the voltage that comes out of the drill charger. if the stress is normal in accordance Battery voltage required by the drill, the damage there is on these batteries, the batteries serve targeted cell is damaged or broken connections between cells in these battrey. so the charger can not charge battery, indicator lights would not light up.

Battery won't charge on my ryobi 14.4v cordless drill yellow and green lights stay on

I had the same problem and found a solution on another forum...
Plug the battery into the charger. The yellow and green lights come on. Leave the battery plugged into the charger. Plug and unplug the charger power cord from it's power source a few times until the the red charger light comes on..... problem solved!

I think the "smart" circuit in the charger that is supposed to trickle charge before the regular charge cycle needs at least some battery power to test and start the cycle. If the battery is totally discharged, the test can't deternine the battery status and will not charge.... Plugging and unplugging the charger seems to bypass this teat and charge the battery normally. The charging process should work normally after this method.

Batteries don't charge. I have a new battery, and neither of the old or new batteries work in the charger. I get flashing lights only, sometimes red, sometimes green, but in the end, the battery isn't...

Dust getting in the charger is a problem, Try blowing it out with a moisture-free dust remover, found at most any store. Green flashing means improper power, due to dust or power from the outlet, try a differant wall outlet. Red flashing means the charger or battery is to hot and must cool down before it will charge. The charger will not charge a battery if the lights are flashing. Solid Red light means it is charging and solid green light means it is charged. Plug the charger in first before putting the battery on the charger. If the charger has been droped or hit the floor the coil inside could have broke loose and dammaged the charger requiring it to be replaced.

Charger not charging

Just was on a website for Ryobi drills and it states that if the yellow and green light stay on for more than 15 minutes the battery is fried. Couldn't find the link but if you do a search for Ryobi Drill 18 volt you should find the same info. It was as product review from Australia I think.

I also have a problem with the charging of Ryobi batterys. They seem to charge AOK with the green light coming on but the charge does not last at all. Not sure if the problem is with the batteries on the charger.
