Hi there,

The most common cause of this is dust, debris or contamination on the heads.

Firstly, it's extremely important that you use only DRY LUBRICANT type DV tapes on the Canon branded camcorders.

Different manufacturers design their heads to be used with either Dry or Wet (coating lubricant type) tapes - NEVER BOTH. Canon is DRY type.

Consumers are led to believe that they should be using well known branded DV tapes, such as Sony. This is fine, if your camcorder is a Sony. However, you should NEVER use Sony tapes in your Canon - Sony tapes are of the WET type.

So, the question is, "Are you currently using Dry or Wet type tapes, or a mixture of both?" If you have used either a WET tape, or a mixture of both in your Canon, then this may have contaminated your heads.

If this is so, then don't panic - simply run a special Head Cleaning cassette (for Dry tapes) in your Canon for no more than 5 secs. Note: your heads are very delicate, so only run the cleaning tapes for a few secs at a time.

Also, try to avoid recording over the cassette too many times, as the quality will sometimes degrade each time.

An example of the Dry tapes are the Panasonic ones (Myself and other Pro Videographers often use Panasonic Prof, Studio or Master Quality tapes, as these are some of the better quality Dry tapes on the market).

As your XL2 is a Pro Camcorder, I recommend you stick with Studio quality (or higher) cassettes.

If the problem still exists after head cleaning, then suspect either a faulty cassette (most likely) or damaged heads requiring service.

Let me know how you get on...

Sometimes when I'm playing movies (blu-ray), my screen flickers, with the sound cutting out and the picture blanks out. There is a message that flashes on the screen, but I'm not able to read it because it...

try with another HDMI cable.
also, is your ps3 connected to the net? some newer bluray support functions that are not available on the player and they need an update.
given how old the ps3 is, it may not fully support playback.

I have a HTC HD. The screen is flickering with a purple colour. The speaker sound has gone scratchy. Any suggestions on what to do would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi! Welcome to www.fixya.com.
When using 2.2 on the HTC HD, select ISO 800 in the photo settings, rather than auto, then switch camera to video as normal. This will considerably reduce the flickering / stuttering during playback when recording at 720p.

Hope this resolution fix the problem on your computer. Thanks for contacting Fixya. God bless. Bye for now.

I have a Pioneer PDP-R05FE 43'' TV. When I connect my PS3 to show Blue Ray films I get a flicker in the picture. It is connected using a good quality HDMI cable. There is no flicker when playing SD films...

go into your dispay menu and adjust the response 50-60hrz or if your tv is capped at 1080i then drop the ps3 to 720p and that will smooth it out alittle too as the interlaced picture is alittle choppy apposed to progressive picures and finally sometimes they just do it no rhyme or reason to it so dont go crazy about this ok :)

Nikon D90,,,brandnew..the LCD screen flickers when recording a movie and when playback pictures they first come up a little blurry and then when they come to sharp focus the picture shrinks slightly....do...

Hello,

The D90 movie mode is not perfect.
Keep the camera steady when shooting movies to reduce flicker.

It sound like you are not in focus when you start recording the movie. Press the shutter button halfway to focus, then press ok to record.
If you do not want the camera to change focus in shot keep the shutter halfway down.

I hope this helps.

Image flicker when viewing pictures in playback mode

You have the camera in Highlights mode.. while in playback use the up,down, right, left pad press it up and it will go through different displays like what settings you had the camera in when you took the picture then there is a graph screen... after that one is the highlights display which is what you have it on. Push up one more time to have it on regular playback mode. The manual explains this much better than I just did. If you have the manual you should check it out if my instructions dont help.

Distorted picture when looking through view finder or lcd screen

the video playback is sampled off the video out and independently processed sorta like a TV signal to project on the lcd screen.
horizontal lines means you lost sync circuit and needs troubleshooting. Hopefully maybe a bad connection with a ribbon cable for the ICs and components are hard to change and jammed tight. I would order a video board.

Sony Camcorder playback problem

mechanical alignment! try to record for a minute and playback the result on another player/recorder, not on your camera, if the playback is not okay then your camera needs alignment, you need pro fix. You said that you've done manual cleaning already, maybe you dis aligned the mechanical parts accidentally, applying too much force on the mechanical parts of your small unit tends to bend, dislocate or move these parts out of alignment. defective videohead will never playback good video, and you said that it seems to correct only a few minutes of playback.
