My Daughter's New Laptop's Internet Connection

My daughter just purchased an HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr laptop computer from the Best Buy in Trussville, AL. She brought it to my house and I connected my Charter broadband cable to her laptop. For some reason, we cannot get connected to the internet that way. Help.

Make sure that the Local area connection is enabled or installed properly. Also Cable ISP such as charter registers the MAC address of the main pc on their system that is why it will not recognize your daughters laptop. You can contact charter so they can register the mac address of her NIC on their system.

Wi-fi is not working..while installing wi-fi drivers ..an error named as qmi module does not exist occured. email [email protected]

Sounds that the wireless adapter daughter board is either loose or failing. First, we need to make sure it is making good contact with the laptop's motherboard. In order to do this, we have to do the following:
1. Turn off the laptop & remove the battery.
2. Look at the compartments in the bottom of the laptop. You should be able to see 2 or 3 areas with small rectangular plates covering them. These plates usually have one or 2 screws holding them in place.
3. Check which one of those plates is the one which covers the wireless adapter daughter board. When you find it unscrew its screws & remove it.
4. Below the plate, there will be a small daughter board screwed to the laptop's motherboard, with 2 thin wires attached to it (usually one black wire & the other is a white wire). Gently, remove both wires using a small flat screw driver to pull them out gently. Don't forget to note down which wire connects to which connection point.
5. Unscrew the wireless adapter daughter board & remove it from its slot.
6. Clean both the slot & the daughter board's terminal connectors using a dry electric contact cleaner. You can purchase it at an electronics store.
7. Leave the slot & the daughter board for a while to dry.
8. Re-place the daughter board back in the slot & screw it to the motherboard.
9. Reconnect the 2 wires.
10. Screw back the covering plate.
11. Put back the battery & turn on the laptop. Check if the problem was fixed.

If this did not fix the problem, you will need to repeat the steps to remove the wireless adapter daughter board & replace it with a new one.

My daughter has a Pavilion dv4-1220 at school and called that her screen went out. The tech guy at the university told her that repairs would probably be more than a new one would cost and that a monitor...

This is one of those 'it depends' things. Usually what fails is the backlighting system. A lcd screen works sort of like a projector. IT requires a backlight shinging through it to be able to see the images. If you (or your daughter) looks at the screen with the laptop running you may see a very ghost like image of the normal desktop display. If that is the case then your display is fine it is jsut the backlight. That can be fixed for about $100.

Since you won't have time to fix it the next thing to try is hook up an external monitor to the laptop. If that works then we have both confirmed that the backlight is the problem and more importantly you can use the laptop as sort of a desktop until you either replace or repair it. It also will let you save off all of her documents and important files before you send it in or replace.

If the external monitor does not work then the chances are the video section has failed. That requires that the mainboard be replaced that is worth about $299 for that model (plus labor and shipping). Not all is lost as you can take the drive out of the laptop put it in a external usb drive enclosure and read the files using a differant computer.

It may be past the 1 year warrenty for HP but is there other warrenty such as store? If you purchased from a chain store they usually try to sell you a store extended warrenty. This won't help you get it fixed that fast but after it at least would pay for repairs.

Getting laptop connected to web-not Int. Explorer 8 issue

In order to get her connected legally, you will have to set up your own wireless network. This will require a broadband connection of some sort (DSL or Cable modem) and a wireless router. Your ISP or the routers tech support should be able to help you with basic configuration.

My new battery won't take a charge. HP Dv1170us

Are you sure everything is plugged in correctly? Look on the cord and make sure there are no "shorts" in it becuase sometimes it can have a "short" circuit to it, even if it's new!

Dell laptop

For brand new products I would first call tech support, there is a possiblity that something isn't quite right that is possible to dianose over the phone.

Second, Since it is a recent purchase, I would return it to the store [maybe a different branch, if closer to where the machine isliving] for exchange.

I bought our daughter an HP laptop computer for Christmas year before last. We have taken that computer back to Best Buy so much they know us by name. They claim they have even sent it back to HP twice...

Is it still under warranty?

Would suggest calling HP Customer Support at 1-800-HP INVENT to see what they can do. They will be able to look up the repairs based on the serial # of the laptop.

Most replacements are only offered after 3rd time the same part is replaced.

You could also try Best Buy customer service at 1-888-237-8289.

Hope this helps.
