Remove the top plastic cover secured by two small screws
-At first glance you'll only notice half of the gears teeth, and as you shift the lever it will apear that the lever's push will bottom out and will not shift past the 4th or 5th gear.
- If you look close with a light you will see that teeth run completely along the entire gear and the teeth get super small just before the biggest tooth of the gear.
-the problem is that the shifter's cam (hooked lever) aka engager is seized and cannot swing into and bite into the smaller teeth.
-With some lube or even wd-40 spray the engager and exercise it with a small screwdriver so it can loosen up and spring into the small teeth.
-Start shifting and releasing several times to work the the lube in
- Install the cover and you're done!
Be careful when removing the plastic cover plate with the gear numbers on them, they have 2 fragile pins that line up with the shifter assembly. very easy to break
Yet the user has not revisited this post to comment on its usefullness. One can't assume that requestor knowledge of a model number carries any weight or implies an understanding of the shifter's operations. Do you know how many people ask no-brainers like 'how to shift or adjust brand x' on a department store bike when there are virtually no unique shifters out there that can't be figured out with a quick web search or a visit to Parktools.com? Loose cables are obvious to you and me but I make no assumptions on the part of the requestor to have checked or even been aware of the obvious stuff and I'm not going to hand-craft an answer every time I see a variation on one of many common themes. You may be right about this shifter in this scenario. Or it could just be a no-brainer adjustment or sticky cable. Neither of us can tell from what is given.
Alex's answer worked for me. Thanks

By losing the cable at the derailer just a little put the bike in the gears it doesn't like manually. Retighten the cable at the lowest or highest gear you use

The root cause could be anything.YOU (having an eyeball on the problem) need to assess it.
Search engines can answer many questions for you. too. "how to adjust..."
tummitm, I have a similar problem, where the right rear won't downshift below 5. Were you able to fix your gear shift? If so, how? Thanks!
Same answer - adjust.
Another non-solution, thanks a lot David!
Hey Alex, you can keep those types of comments to yourself. Neither the original post nor your detailed answer for the shifter proceeds from any certain knowledge that the problem is at the shifter instead of the cables or derailleur adjustment. A really loose cable could be the cause, too.
So sorry dave, I've fixed three of these shifters and these are infamous for this probllem, I suspect a loose cable would be obvious. The asker clearly stated the model number which means he/she is having problems unique to the particular shifter mentioned.
It may not be that pearl of wisdom, "the root cause could be anything, YOU have to ***** it". "do a google search", gem that you blessed the asker with but I'm trying to help the person and not just increase my fixya points. Less Internet pollution!
