Sony Grand WEGA KDF-55XS955 screen getting dark. adjusted brightness/ contrast to max and the screen still dark.

If its the model indicated here or one similar(kdf-55xs955) you may be seeing a lamp that is about to fail.

A lot of these just before lamp failure will get very dark and if bad enough the set will even shut off.

If i could see a picture I could be me specific, but it sounds like one of the lamps, is misdirected. try the auto focus on the set.

Blue blotches spreading over the screen are failure of the optical block

Don't bedeterred by the dating of this announcement, it is a manufacturing fault and they have been pr5etty good to a lot of people with the same problem.

Adjust video settings:

1. Press Wega Gate
2. Select Settings
3. Highlight Video
4. Press + to select
5. Adjust/increase the brightness.
6. Press Wega gate to exit.

If picture is still dark, you need to replace the lamp again. Sony recommends that you replace the lamp:

1. After approximately 8,000 hours of use.
2. When the screen becomes dark or the color becomes unusual.
3. When the lamp indicator on the front of the TV flashes.
   

Yes, time to replace the lamp. You can do it yourself.

first reset direct tv box unplug for 5 minutes then plug back in because it could be direct tv

if this does not work replace the lamp anyways see the link below for part and how to do it
