Ubuntu Grub error 17

Error 17 sounds like a grub bootloader problem, IE: your Acer disk didn't perhaps reload the boot code for Windows, or remove grub entirely.

once Ubuntu has been installed on your computer has corrected the fault you will be able to reinstall windows
or keep ubuntu and install windows next door to it

you can have a dual boot computer with both windows and ubuntu linux you will need to partition your hard drive to do this
is a free partition program.
I have actually used this process to fix my computer with similiar problems and it works.

Click start control panel administrative tools computer management then select event viewer this may vary depending on what operating system you have

extend the events there you will see errors in red you will no what exactly what the error was and at what time it occurred

Right click on the error message select properties you will see all details about the error

or click start type in event viewer pressENTER
this should give you some sort of understanding of the error and
you might be able work your way through the problem

Since GRUB is your bootloader, your computer now doesn't know where to boot. Your Windows XP data is still present but you cannot boot on it.
What you can do is to use a Live CD to copy your Windows files. Ubuntu is a popular choice. You can get it here : http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Boot on your Live CD, backup your files, then reinstall your OS of choice.

maybe if go to "start" right "my computer" click on "disk mangament" that ubuntu partition u deleted should be there and i think u need to add it to the windows partition allocate or allocated it i think...im not 100% ...make sure u do some reasrch before u make any changes....jus givin u my thoughts

when this happened to me on my Vista machine last year, I freaked out until I accidentally fixed it using by booting with my original Vista boot disc, and choosing 'Repair OS'. Try finding a/your original Windows XP install disc and seeing if it will repair and replace your own Windows boot sector. It would be best to find the one that came with your system, or another like it, but if all else fails, just try a hologrammed Windows XP install CD, but instead of 'install', choose 'repair'.

If you run a dual-boot system with Linux and Windows, this has happened to you. You had to do your monthly reinstall of Windows, and now you don’t see the linux bootloader anymore, so you can’t boot into Ubuntu or whatever flavor of linux you prefer.
Here’s the quick and easy way to re-enable Grub.
1) Boot off the LiveCD
2) Open a Terminal and type in the following commands, noting that the first command will put you into the grub “prompt”, and the next 3 commands will be executed there. Also note that hd0,0 implies the first hard drive and the first partition on that drive, which is where you probably installed grub to during installation. If not, then adjust accordingly.
sudo grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
> exit
Reboot (removing the livecd), and your boot menu should be back.

Only read below if Windows is now missing from the boot menu
If you installed Ubuntu before you installed Windows, then Ubuntu will not have anything in the grub configuration for Windows. This is where you’ll have to do a bit of manual editing to the grub boot menu file.
If you open the file /boot/grub/menu.lst with the following command:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
You’ll see a sample section for Windows, which you’ll want to uncomment and add to the boot menu list in whatever position you want it in. (uncomment by removing the #’s)
# title Windows 95/98/NT/2000
# root (hd0,0)
# makeactive
# chainloader +1
Note that you should also verify that hd0,0 is the correct location for Windows. If you had installed Windows on the 4th partition on the drive, then you should change it to (hd0,3)

Its GRand Unified Bootloader used in Linux OS.
Normally you get this error when GRUB is not able recognise the partition from which you are trying to boot the system. Make sure the boot partition on your system is recognisable by GRUB (such as EXT3).

You can try to restore the GRUB using the LIVE CD

1. Boot From Live CD
2. Open Terminal Window
3. type >sudo grub
4. then type : find /boot/grub/stage1
5. you'll get something like: (hd0, 1)
6. then type : >root (hd0, 1)
7. type: > setup (hd0)
8. >quit
9. >exit

Remove the Live CD and reboot the system.

You should install Ubuntu from inside Windows with the wubi program. When you boot you will have Windows as the default boot option and Ubuntu as a second option. Choose the Ubuntu installation to reside on the external drive. You will connect the drive if you use Ubuntu.

If you do not do that, reinstall ubuntu on the external drive and choose to write the boot sector for GRUB or LILO on the external drive, not on the MBR of the primary drive.

You have to delete the ubuntu partition completely and recreate a new partition for the vista install. You can do this during the vista setup.

If you don't have windows on the computer, you can try the Ubuntu alternate install disk or reinstalling if you haven't tried that already. Do either of you have more then one hard drive? If so, which drive did you install Ubuntu on?
