SOURCE: SimpleTech 250GB External Hard Drive Installation problem

I bought the Simpletech Signature Mini 250GB last week and had these same issues. I wrote to the company's tech support and the solutions works. It boils down to you having to create a drive letter & partition for this. It took a little time to format, but it's all good now. I agree we shouldn't have such a headache for such a simple piece of hardware, though. I will cut/paste the info below. Once it was done, I was able to go to My Computer and see it listed as Drive H (which was what I selected).

PROBLEM: I have followed directions re: plugging device in, still cannot see device in MY COMPUTER. I have also tried plugging both USB's into computer to no avail. Even tried using it on my laptop, still not showing. My desktop is XP & loaptop is Vista. When I go to remove the dirve, it DOES show as Fujitsu, but I cannot acces the drive or locate it elsewhere. I really want to like this, but will have to return it if this issue is not resolvable.

SOLUTION: You might need to initialize the drive.

Right click on “My Computer” or “Computer” on Vista.
Select “Manage”
On the next screen select “Disk Management”
In the lower middle section you should be able to find your drive.
It will show up as Disk 1 or Disk 2….depending on how many drives you have in your computer.
If you click on the area that says Disk # you should get and option to “initialize drive”.
Also to the right it should show the allocation information for the drive. If it says “unallocated” then the drive needs to be partitioned.
Right click on the white box next to the drive listing.
Select the option “New Partition”
This will bring up the partition wizard and you will need to step through this process.
Select a primary partition.
On the next screen accept the maximum size it will provide.
On the next screen you assign a drive letter.
On the next screen you will do the format and accept the default settings.
The formatting will start and will be busy until it is complete.
You can monitor this from the disk management window.

Regards,

SimpleTech Technical Support

Hope it helps!

SOURCE: Can not open the bpa files on my external simpletech drive

did you use special software or windows backup?? try to use the same software to restore your files. In windows you need to restore your files to special folder, you give it a name. then you open the folder and there you have your files.
Make sure you log on as the same user who backed up the files, of course one who has the right to restore the files.

If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning. Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement.

Sometimes, the hard drive is assigned to a network drive and you may need to manually change the drive's letter in Disk Management. Enable Drive Letter View b> Click the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel" from the start menu. Click "Folder Options" and navigate to the "View" tab. Scroll down and place a mark next to "Show drive letters," then click "OK." b> Configuring Drive Manager b> Click the "Start" button to launch the start menu. This will show you a list of drives and removable storage on your computer. It will also report the status of the drives, such as "Healthy." If the removable storage does not have a drive letter or has a drive letter in conflict with another drive, you can assign it a new letter. Right-click the icon of your removable storage drive and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths." Click the "Change" button, then choose a drive letter from the drop-down menu. If the external hard drive emits a loud or abnormal sound, this could mean the device is failing. Test the drive on another computer to see if it is working properly. Otherwise, the external hard drive's surface area may be damaged or corrupted. b> Replacing a Defective Hard Drive b> You can return a defective hard drive that is under warranty to SimpleTech. The manufacturer will exchange the device if the seal is not broken. But if you break or tear the seal on the case, any warranty claims will not be accepted and the device will be returned back to you. SimpleTech will only accept the device if you contracted a commercial data recovery company to retrieve critical data from the external hard drive and the seal needed to be broken. Before returning the defective drive, you will need to secure a RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) approval number from SimpleTech and furnish any invoices or documentation regarding the data recovery company's services.

Cant find driver for SimpleTech 250gb external hd. Is it available?

Should not be necessary. It is recognized by the system automatically. Try connecting to another port, check the data cable and the connection to the unit, it may be corroded or loose.

I have a 250 gb simpletech external hard drive. no. 96200-41001-077. I have used it as the time machine backup on my MacBook. It stopped backing up time machine recently. I got the message. Backup failed...

> icon does not show up on the desktop or finder

A major "clue" that one component of the external storage device has failed, namely:

* USB cable (try a different one)

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure

* optionally, the external power-supply that connects to the enclosure

Use a multi-meter to verify the voltage/amperage output of that power-supply.
(Not all external storage devices need such a power-supply.)

> can it be saved?

Partially. Disassemble the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage-device. (Compare it to a heart-transplant -- same body, new heart.)

My computer doesn't recognize my external hard drive and I don't have the CD to install it again. What do I do?

Try the external hard-drive in another computer.
If that computer also refuses to recognize it, then there is something wrong with the external hard-drive.

Installation cd

Hello, technically you should not need the install CD for this as any modern computer you plug it into should be able to recognize it and use it. However if you feel you need any downloads go to the manufacturers website which is HERE. Good Luck! Dr. Know
