Hi I recently bought the 790sw I have only charged the battery twice and now for some reason the battery will not charge. The red charge light continually flashes no matter how long you charge the battery and the camera will not start up. I am not sure whether it is a problem with the charger or problem with the battery
I had this problem a few weeks ago (i.e. flashing red LED). All I did was remove the power plug from the charging unit, turned it around 180 degrees, then plugged it back into the charging unit. Red LED came on steady & the battery (which is the one that came with the camera) recharged as normal.
Thank you I had the same prolem and the best solution is to take the cord out of the charger and make sure its plugged in correctly now my battery charges fine
I had the same problem with the flashing LED on the charger. I unplugged all connections and took the battery out then blew all connections in case of dust. I flipped the cord that plugs into the charger bay and put the battery in. Seems to be working.
This method indeed worked! I have had the exact issue with my LI-40C battery charger, it won't charge the original manufacturer's battery (9 months old) and the method above did the trick. Try doing that, is should work 99% of the time. My guess is the connector to the bay really need to be connected exactly for the battery to charge. The light should be solid red when charging and should go off once charging is complete.
I've been having the same problem for quite some time now. I've used all the solutions mentioned here, but this one seems to be the answer. I wonder if it's a polarity issue?
This is the solution, well at least the cord reversal. As the cord can be plugged in with polarity, if you get the flashing light just reverse the cord

If the charger is flashing red then the battery was allowed to fully discharge. You can either buy a new battery or force the charger to charge the battery. The way you do this is by applying a voltage across the charging terminals while inserting the battery. I opened the case of my charger and attached wires from a AAA battery to the corresponding wires attached to the charging deck (+ to red and - to black). Then I slipped the battery into the charger and plugged the charger into tho wall. The light should illuminate solid red (no flashing). Then immediately (and carefully) remove the wires from the charger.
Try cleaning the terminals on the battery and charger with an alcohol wipe like the kind you use to clean eye and sun glasses...it may take a few tries but it seems to be working this far.
Cleaning the terminals worked where other suggestions had failed for me. I did it by lightly rubbing the terminals with an emery board (normally used for finger nails). It does appear flashing problem was caused by poor terminal connections. The battery now appears to be charging OK with steady red light on.

How about this one: Take the battery out and put it back in the camera and turn the camera on. Hopefully theres just enough juice to power it up. Then turn the camera off before it auto shuts off, take the battery out and put it back in the charger. Utterly illogical I know but it works. Pure witchcraft eh?
This appears to be a problem with cheap copy batteries. I've got the original Olympus battery that came with my camer and have no problems with charging i.e. the light comes on and stays solid red until the battery is charged at which point the light turns solid green. If i put in the cheap 'copy' batteries that I got off Ebay from China or somewhere, the led light flashes red continually, no matter how long I leave the batter on the charger for. I put the battery in my camera to check to see if it was charging at all and it has no charge in it. So I'm going to throw away the cheap battery I got. I think the flashing red light means that the charger is unable to charge that battery for some reason? Not sure why as I can't find any documentation on the net anywhere. Hope this helps some people.
Everyone seems to have the same problem but no one seems to have the solution. Well I have the SOLUTION. Weather you have a cheap battery or the original battery that came with your Olympus you have only one choice, get that battery charged up. Here is how you do it. Take a little piece of cardboard (very thin) like the cardboard of a match book cover and tear it in the size of the battery and place it into the battery charger under the battery. The light should turn solid red. If not take another piece of the match book cover ( or a very thin piece of cardboard again) and tear it into the shape of the battery and place it on top of the battery while it is in the charger. This should create a tight fit. You will all so need to touch it a couple of time (play with it to get the light to turn solid red) because each battery is a tad bit different. This sandwich method should work. Try it out and play with this concept. It does work and all you have to do is get the darn light to turn red.
Paper under the battery worked for me!

I had the same problem with the original batteries but when i wiped the charger with a napkin got solid light again. I don't think that the solution is to reverse the connection of the two parts cause the light was blinking with the one Olympous battery and was solid with the other twin one. (I bought the Olympous batteries,the same day, 6 years ago)
Cleaning the terminals worked for me.
Force charging the battery with an external charger ( make sure correct polarity) will help. Even you can use the mobile charger to charge the batteries. Connect the batteries to the external charger for some time ( 10 minutes or so) and then try in the battery charger.LED will be steady.

Same problem. LI-40C charger worked first time I used it, but the second time, the "charge" light blinked red, would not turn green at any length of time, and would not charge battery.

I have the same problem only it's the original battery that came with the camera. The manual has no explanation for the flashing red light. My battery is less than a year old.

We have the same problem. Our camera has had regular use for the past 6 months and it was fine yesterday. Now today the camera wont turn on and the battery flashes red continually and will not charge.
I don't think it's got anything to do with "cheap copy batteries." I have the original battery, and I have the same problem. I've had the camera for about 8 months. It has worked fine until now.
