Yeah this same thing happened to me, I had not played the PS3 in a while, my 2 sons 6 and 12 play it more than me!. Anyway one day I went to put a disc in, and low and behold it wouldn't read the disc!. Next thing I know I'm getting an error message saying "needs to rebuild database". It was unable to rebuild the database and instructed me to reformat the hard drive!, well I didn't reformat it, instead I turned off the system, unplugged all the cords and let it sit for 24 hours. When I hooked it back up, the error message disappeard and it was reading discs again! HURRAY!!!. What I'm going to do, and you might want to as well is, invest in and external USB hard drive. They sell them at Best Buy for around $100.00. The PS3 has a backup utility, but you need somewhere to back it up to. I'm not sure if any USB external hard drive will work, but you might want to check into it. Hope this helps.

i've had the ps3 for about a year and its just decided to stop reading the disk i put in! i reformatted it and it still didnt help! does anyone know how to fix this!!!
I played it last night. This afternoon i turned it on, i expected it to automatically load up the game that was already in the console and it just stayed at the home menu. I put in other discs and it just showed the loading circle but the disk icon never came up. How could it just stop working in 24 hours?!?!
