If it will not shut down, that is an indication of a regulator problem or mal-adjustment. For best results, replace it. Craftsman/Sears should have the part.
Is this device 120 or 220?
If important, you can 'reply' to this post and that will return to my attention.

this isn't a regulator problem but a pressure switch problem. Most end users do not nderstand that a long air hose is required for remote use rather than a long cord...especially when operating a portable compressor on 110 VAC.
220 VAC will cut the amp draw of the motor in half. This is critically important on start-up when the in-rush current will really dim your lights.
also assess the in-tank check valve for proper function. This is the piece that holds the air in the tank when the pump stops and allows the unloader assembly to release the air trapped between the check valve and the exhaust valve in the head...you should hear a loud hiss for a few seconds when the pump stops. If you don't hear the hiss at this point it is an unloader problem (this is usually a componenet of the pressure switch) and if the hiss doesn't stop then the unloader is doing its' job and the check valve is shot. Sears parts or your local air compressor shop should be able to help with diagnosis and repair part purchase...
