How to Defrag a Dell Computer
1. Open the My Computer window. To do this on a Dell computer, click on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen. Then, click "My Computer".
2. Choose the hard disk drive that you want to defrag. Locate the section entitled "Hard Disk Drives." In this section is a list of hard drives on the computer. For most Dell computers, the hard disk drive you will want to defrag is Local Disk (C:).
3. Right-click on the hard disk drive you want to defrag on the Dell computer. If you want to defrag your C: drive, then right-click on "Local Disk (C:)". A menu bar will appear.
4. Click on "Properties." "Properties" is the last option on the menu bar. This opens the Local Disk (C:) Properties window.
5. Click the "Tools" tab. The Tools tab is the second tab in the Local Disk (C:) Properties window. The tabs are located on the top of the window.
6. Click the "Defragment Now" button. The "Defragment Now" button is in the Defragmentation section of the window. This opens the Disk Defragmenter window.
7. Click to select the disk drive you want to defrag on a Dell computer and then click "Defragment." For most Dell computers, this will be (C:). After you click "Defragment," the Dell computer will first analyze the disk drive you selected and then beginning defragging the Dell computer.
8. Wait for the "Defragmentation is Complete" message. If you have not defragged a Dell computer in a long time, then the defragging process might take a while, even as long as an hour for very fragmented Dell computers. Allow the Dell computer to run the defrag until the process is completed. You will know that the Dell computer has completed the defrag process when the "Defragmentation is Complete" message appears.
9. View the defrag report and then close the window. If you want to view the defrag report, click "View Report." Otherwise, click "Close" to close the window.

also on topic, updated apps for Defrag can even move the boot files for windows in the fastest tracks of the drive,(smart defrag)
if you want windows to boot faster.
but buying SSD is the best cure of all.
getting off the Slow HDD is best .

Boot off the Recovery disk or while booting off hard drive press F11 to start the recovery mode. Note that using this method will make the computer just as it was out of the box. Your files will be gone as will any software you have installed.

How can i defrag my dell optiplex 380

Here's how you can defragment your disk:

Windows Vista, 7:

  1. Open Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Disk Defragmenter, and then, in the list of results, click Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Under Current status, select the disk you want to defragment.
  3. To determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not, click Analyze disk. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of fragmentation on the disk in the Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.
  4. Click Defragment disk. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the defragmentation process.

Windows XP:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
  4. Click Defragment.

Most likely the driver just got corrupted when you defraged your hard drive. If you go to "support.dell.com" you can download and reinstall the audio driver for your computer.

If you have trouble let me know the version of Windows you have and I will direct you to the drivers that you need to get.

I have a dell inspiron 700 and a hp dvdrw. the dell recogonizes the dvdrw and downloads, but when i try to burn, nothing happens.

Uninstall the software for the DVDRW then reinstall. Next check to see if you need to defrag the hard drive. Analyze first then do defrag on hard drive.

My Computer Wont Defrag

Best way to Defrag is to start up in Safe mode and run the Defrag program. Time to defrag depends on size of HD and free space.
Degragging in normal mode also enables your anti-virus software which I' ve found to interfere with defragging. Best of luck to you and I hope this solves your problem.
