If the D610 works when attached to the AC Power Cord, it is likely that your battery is not capable of taking a charge and needs to be replaced. I have 2 D610 Dell Latitudes and they are very good laptops.

How do I get my computer to recognized my new ac power adapter?

The computer doesn't need any drivers to recognize an AC Adapter. If you have purchased the correct AC Adapter for your laptop then it should just work when you plug it in. If it does not then my guess is either you have received a faulty AC Adapter or the DC Jack which you plug into in the back of the laptop is bad.
I am assuming your battery is dead and when you plug it in and turn it on nothing happens?
You can also try taking the battery out and try to power it on with the AC Adapter plugged in.

The Dell Latitude D610 takes a PA-10 or PA12 AC Adapter. It's 65W or 90W

For 90 watt Adapter the output voltage on your AC Adapter label should read 19.5V and 4.62A
At least that's what the Dell brand reads so it should be close to that.

Edited by tech1: Battery problem on old laptop dell, the most common failure on any PC laptop/notebooks'and tablets.

the batteries eventually wear out and quit taking a charge. You can run the system without a battery with no ill effects. replacements are about $100 for a new battery

My Dell latitude d610 charging circuit not working on board

What needs to be done is the jack that your adaptor plugs into has solder points underneath it. All the solder points need to be resoldered to make sure that there are no cracks in the solder that are preventing the jack from charging your battery.

After this is done if the laptop still isn't charging then if you know for sure your using the correct ac adaptor with your laptop then at that point the moterboard would have to be replaced.

Power for battery on DELL laptop Latitude D610 as posted FixYa

In the BIOS, does it show the battery and it's current state? As weird as it sounds, I've fixed an issue like this on a D600 by updating the BIOS to the most current level. Weird, but true.

Dell d610 latitude wont charge new battery

Hey,
First off, do you have a way to check the output of the ac adapter to ensure it's putting out the correct current?
If you've done that and have a multimeter handy, you can remove the battery, system off, and check the charge pins for current/voltage. I believe one of the end pins is neg (ground) and at least one of the other pins should show 2.6-3.6V, as well as other various voltages. If you fail to get any response at the charger pins, we'll need to look at the board circuitry, assuming again that the ac adapter is operating properly.
Good luck
