I have a Kohler generator set model KT17 that was not run for several years and was full of old gasoline. It would not start at all so I replaced plugs, cleaned fuel pump & filter, then cleaned carb and replaced float valve. Now the engine will start with every try, but will not keep running. It dies within one or two seconds. Could there be something in the carb that is still clogged? I was thinking the main fuel adjustment screw (needle) could be clogged. Any other ideas?

Check the genset controller for a fault, low oil psi, no output voltage, overspeed, overcrank / no crank disconnect signal / starter staying engaged, high engine temp.

change the oil to the correct specification first. As the engine runs the heat changes the viscosity and overheats or trips the oil alert switch. If its over 10 years old change the oil alet magnetic switch
a stuck float in the carb can cause this as well as old gas do to schlack build up from gas evaperating the carb should be removed and cleaned with carb cleaner and old gaskets replaced a carb kit will run about $20.00 and avail from small engine shops.
the engine number will be needed for the right kit at the bottom of the engine where it mounts there is a flat boss with a number stamped that will be needed for parts.
when the engine is stored the best thing it to run the engine and shut off the gas and run till it stops this will get ride of the gas in the carb there will still be a small amount left in it but follow recommended long term storage prep from the manufacture. hope this helps
ALWAYS CHECK THE POINTS!!! 20 years operating this engine and you'd think I would know better. The points were severely pitted. Spec said .020 but actual is .013. The cold weather had me suspecting a carb problem. DOH!
