Samsung PCN5425R 54" Rear Projection Television Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 23, 2011

I have a samsung dlp Model no. Pcn5425r The problem I am having is that the picture is all distorted with curved edges and blurry doubled images. I thought it was a convergence problem so I replaced it with a new part...but it is still doing the same thing...I am guessing it is maybe the color wheel? But I don't have the whistling or loud noise sound as described by some who have color wheel problems...what could it be..should I try replacing the color wheel too?

Thanks for your response. I did run the perfect focus and it stops at about 33% and then goes back to the picture which is still messed up. Maybe it is a blown fused like you mentioned? Are these easy to locate and change myself?

    Thanks

You don't have a color wheel in this model. There is probably a fuse blown that you missed or a resistor in the circuit outside the convergence IC's (STK 392-040). Did you press the perfect focus in the convergence part of the menu?

Thanks for the response...Yes I ran the perfect focus several times and it stops at about 33% then goes back to the messed up picture. Maybe it is a blown fuse like you suggested. Where are they located and pretty easy to change?

    Thanks

Why am I getting pictures with curved edges edges

Hi Ian
What you are suffering is something called barrel distortion which causes images to appear spherised or "inflated". Barrel distortion is associated with wide angle lenses and typically occurs at the wide end of a zoom lens. The use of converters often amplifies the effect. It is most visible in images with perfectly straight lines, especially when they are close to the edge of the image frame

the way to solve it is to try not use the end of the of the zoom of your lens. Above 20 mm you should be fine. If this is not possible then you can correct the effect in programmes like Photoshop

Hope this helps

The picture projects the image with concave lines on the edges. I'll explain further: somehow the picture is distorted in a way that bends the four edges of the picture in a curved-concave manner so that...

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Seeing double on my samsung rear pro

The convergence IC's are definitely bad. They are not a plug-in device, they solder in so this is a big job.

Curved picture and double images

I had noticed your question before posting mine, since it appears no one had given you a solution thought i would share the solution given to me. Two different techs told me the same thing it would need a new convergence board. I ordered my board today hopefully have fixed soon as it arrives. I noticed your question has been hear awhile but thought maybe if you still needed some help I would share. It is going to save me $300 doing it myself, but if you are going to try make sure to talk to one of the techs first on live chat. Goodluck
